Wrexham were aiming to end the day top of League One when they travelled to Shrewsbury Town on January 16th.

The Red Dragons’ last outing saw them secure a much-needed 1-0 win over Peterborough United on January 4th.

Steven Fletcher came off the bench to net the winner in that tie and was rewarded for his recent fine form with Phil Parkinson selecting him in Wrexham’s starting lineup versus Shrewsbury Town.

Alongside the Scotsman, Ryan Barnett came back into the team after missing the Peterborough victory, as did Elliot Lee.

Captain James McClean was also back in from the off after being benched in place of Jacob Mendy last time out.

Paul Mullin was dropped to the bench amid his struggles for goals, while there was no place in the Wrexham matchday squad for Ollie Palmer.

Wrexhams fans have a lot to say about Steven Fletcher after Shrewsbury Town

Shrewsbury actually took the lead on Thursday after 16 minutes thanks to John Marquis.

However, as has become so common of late, Fletcher stepped up to score his fifth goal in seven appearances in the 23rd minute.

After he headed in Barnett’s cross, Wrexham fans have taken to social media to share their thoughts on the 37-year-old.

Fletcher earned a comparison to Manchester United legend Cristiano Ronaldo on the back of his leaping header.

Another fan wrote: “There’s nobody better than Steven Fletcher!”

A third Wrexham supporter added: “Yes nice, thank goodness he started.”

“Not even Aguero [is better than Fletcher],” a fourth supporter responded.

While a fifth stated: “Steven Fletcher I love you,” and a sixth added: “Fletcher again ole ole, great work by Rathbone.”

A seventh fan wrote: “Loving me some Fletcher… especially when served by Barnett.”

Wrexham need to make big Steven Fletcher call

After netting on Thursday, Fletcher is now the club’s top-scoring centre-forward in League One this season with six goals.

However, while he’s outshining the likes of Mullin and Palmer, his future at the Racecourse Ground is in doubt.

The former Wolverhampton Wanderers ace is out of contract in the summer, with previous reports suggesting Fletcher could leave Wrexham in January.

That does seem very unlikely given how well he’s playing now, but it’ll be interesting to see if he’s done enough to earn a fresh contract despite his advanced age.
