The domino effect that could see Wrexham sell Paul Mullin may start vs Shrewsbury Town

Wrexham go head-to-head with Shrewsbury Town on January 16th and the fallout from that game could begin a series of events that see Paul Mullin sold.

The Red Dragons are looking to climb back into the automatic promotion places on Thursday when they face Shrewsbury Town.

Wrexham go into their midweek fixture sat third in League One but are only behind Wycombe Wanderers via goal difference having played the same number of games.

Wycombe have been heavily weakened this month due to player and manager exits, making it the perfect time for Phil Parkinson’s side to capitalise and join Birmingham City in the top two.

Ahead of the game, meanwhile, there’s been a very interesting update on centre-forward, Jack Marriott.

He’s been injured since October but has now declared himself ‘ready to return’.

What could happen at Wrexham to see Paul Mullin sold

Prior to his injury, Marriott was in sensational form, scoring five League One goals in just 10 matches.

He was keeping Paul Mullin out of the team and given how poor the Liverpool-born ace has been in front of goal this season and the fact Wrexham are away from home against Shrewsbury, it wouldn’t be surprising to see Marriott thrust straight back into the eleven in place of Mullin for the clash.

The 30-year-old is out of contract in the summer but should he pick up where he left off prior to his broken leg, it seems obvious the Red Dragons will hand him a new contract.

Away from Marriott, Wrexham are in the market for a new striker this month, with both Michael Smith and Jayden Danns linked this week.

Should the Welsh outfit get that duo, or two more centre-forwards through the door, Parkinson will have seven number nines for two positions.

If Marriott continues playing well and earns a new deal, he is expected to keep his place in the team.

Ollie Palmer has just signed a new contract this season, so it seems unlikely he will be moved on.

Steven Fletcher is 37 and though the obvious choice to depart, his goals off the bench have been invaluable to the club’s promotion push this term.

Modou Faal, meanwhile, has struggled for minutes in League One but he’s clearly a signing for the future.

In turn, given Mullin has underperformed heavily since returning to the third tier, still has a decent amount of time left on his contract and is younger than Palmer, he is currently Wrexham’s most sellable striker.

The 30-year-old has been a true servant for the club but if Rob McElhenney and Ryan Reynolds want to continue their climb up the EFL, there can be little room for sentiment.

And unfortunately for Mullin, if Marriott gets a new contract and one or two strikers are signed this month, Wrexham will have too many centre-forwards and he is the obvious candidate to earn the club some money.

Paul Mullin transfer value

Mullin is under contract at the Racecourse until 2027, meaning Wrexham could still net a tidy profit if he’s sold in January or in the summer if they are promoted to the Championship.

He signed for the club on a free transfer from Cambridge United in 2021, meaning any money made is pure profit.

Transfermarkt value the Wrexham striker at €650k (around £548,000), making him their most valuable forward by some distance.

Palmer is worth €125,000, Faal €400,000, Marriott €450,000 and Fletcher €100,000.
