Wrexham moved to within four points of Wycombe in the race for promotion as they secured a dramatic 2-1 victory over Crawley Town.

Wrexham took the lead inside two minutes when Matty James fired home from an Ollie Rathbone pass to give Phil Parkinson the perfect start.

Lewis Brunt excelled in the Wrexham player ratings and looked to have marshalled his side to a clean sheet before a late stunner from Crawley’s Bradley Ibrahim broke Wrexham hearts.

The Red Dragons did not surrender however, as a late cross from Ryan Longman was headed home by Elliot Lee, arriving late from a deeper midfield position.

It ensured pandemonium in the away end and a vital three points in the League One promotion race following Wycombe’s 1-1 draw at Cambridge United.

Wrexham fans heap praise on Elliot Lee after winning goal against Crawley Town

Wrexham fans had been calling for Lee to be dropped after having started up front with Ollie Palmer in recent weeks.

However, after his heroic last minute winner, it seems the Wrexham fans have changed their minds on the attacking talent and have been singing his praises.

One Wrexham fan took to X and wrote: “Elliot Lee, what a player and what a man he never gives up for us, come on huge win.”

Another fan wrote: “Elliot Lee! Back in the position he needs to be in and he comes up with the goods. Parkinson take note please.”

The relief from the fans was clear to see after Lee’s late header, another fan wrote: “We made hard work of that, don’t know why we always sit back when winning. Lee should be playing in midfield and that’s why he will score goals from there.”

Elliot Lee should be played in midfield for Wrexham

Phil Parkinson has been urged by Wrexham experts to stop playing Lee up front given that he is much more effective from the midfield position where he can get on the ball and dictate play.

Lee has now contributed seven goals and four assists in all competitions for Wrexham this season and could provide new strikers Sam Smith and Jay Rodriguez with some much-needed service.

James, Rathbone and Dobson all work hard for Wrexham and have been having excellent seasons however, with Lee in midfield, it does provide Parkinson’s side with a more natural ball player in the middle of the park.

It will be interesting to see whether the late cameo has forced Parkinson to make any changes ahead of the EFL Trophy tie with Port Vale.
