Wrexham take on Exeter City in what is another crucial encounter for their promotion hopes.

Wrexham’s 1-0 win over Stockport moved the Red Dragons into second place in League One and in the final automatic promotion spot with just eight games remaining.

Exeter manager Gary Caldwell is aware of Wrexham’s threat from their previous encounter and it means that wide men such as Ryan Longman will need to find a way through a stubborn defence.

Wrexham are facing Exeter at the worst time with the Grecians on a six game unbeaten run but Phil Parkinson’s side may have one thing in their favour with Exeter having history with the referee in charge.

Who is the referee for Wrexham’s clash with Exeter

The referee for Wrexham’s clash with Exeter at St James Park is Alex Chilowicz.

He will be joined by assistants Thomas Harty and Declan O’Shea, whilst Alan Young will be the fourth official.

Alex Chilowicz referee record in 2024/25 season

Chilowicz has had a busy campaign so far, taking charge of 28 games across Leagues One and Two and also games in the Carabao Cup and FA Cup.

The American referee has produced 55 yellow cards in the 16 League One games he has taken charge of this season and has brandished two red cards.

Gary Caldwell criticised Chilowicz earlier in the season

Chilowicz officiated Exeter’s 2-0 home defeat to Birmingham back in November 2024 and after the game manager Caldwell had some strong words for the official.

Speaking to Exeter’s official X account, Caldwell stated: ““The ref didn’t know what he was doing. He books people, he gives fouls, he doesn’t give fouls, he gives a penalty, there was a handball in their first goal.”

Caldwell will not be on the touchline for the upcoming clash with Wrexham and it is no wonder after strong words such as those towards officials.

A professional such as Chilowicz will not let past encounters affect his performance but Exeter have certainly done themselves no favours with their previous remarks.

Chilowicz took charge of Wrexham’s 3-0 win over Shrewsbury Town

Wrexham were officiated by Chilowicz on one occasion this season and it proved to be a memorable encounter for Parkinson’s side as they brushed aside rivals Shrewsbury Town at the Racecourse Ground.

Goals from Ollie Palmer, Elliot Lee and Jack Marriott gave the Red Dragons a resounding victory however Lee was also among three players to be cautioned by Chilowicz.

James McClean and George Dobson were also in the book that day and Wrexham will know that keeping their discipline against Exeter will be vital in securing three points.
