Wrexham have turned their slow start to the season around and now find themselves fourth in League Two after a resounding 3-0 win over Grimsby Town.

Wrexham capped off an impressive run of results at the weekend, beating Grimsby Town 3-0 at the Stok Racecourse.

The game was the first between the clubs since May 2022, when Phil Parkinson’s men suffered National League play-off heartbreak after losing to the Mariners 5-4 in extra time.

Wrexham cruise to 3-0 win over Grimsby Town

Parkinson’s men cruised to a 3-0 victory at the weekend, capping off one of the best performances of the season. Goals from Ollie Palmer, Will Boyle and top scorer Elliot Lee secured all three points for the home side, who have extended their unbeaten record in League Two to seven games.

Ollie Palmer headed home from close range to give the Reds the lead after what had been a pretty even first 20 minutes.

Ten minutes later, the Reds were 2-0 up after James McClean swung in a fantastic cross for Will Boyle to head into the net. On 79 minutes, the home side killed the game off as Elliot Lee slotted home a Sam Dalby pass.

Wrexham have been striving for ‘solid, workmanlike’ performance

After the game, Wrexham assistant manager Steve Parkin said“It was good because we were playing against a good team.

“Grimsby are well organised and have had a good start to the season and I think we’ve been striving and looking for a real, solid workmanlike, but with good football in it (performance).

“We’ve not quite had it in long periods, by today I thought we were really good.”

Wrexham turn slow start to season around to move into fourth in League Two

The win now moves Wrexham up to fourth in League Two, just three points behind leaders Gillingham. It’s been quite the turnaround for the Reds, who got off to a decidedly slow start to life in League Two.

The Welsh club lost on the opening day of the season, and had just one win in their opening five games. However, after going out of the EFL Cup to Bradford, Wrexham have now won three league games on the bounce, while also beating Newcastle U21s in the EFL Trophy.

It’s been a superb response from the lads to turn things around in such a short space of time. New signings have settled in well, and Paul Mullin is back in the starting XI which is a huge positive moving forward.

The club is currently sitting pretty in the League Two playoff places, with fourth, fifth, sixth and seventh places qualifying for the 2023 League Two play-offs at the end of the season.

Remember: three teams will be automatically promoted at the end of the season, so the Reds have put themselves in a fantastic position eight games in.

The Dragons go into next week’s clash against 13th placed Stockport County knowing that nothing but all three points will do.
