Wrexham are building momentum in the League One promotion race as they picked up a vital 1-0 win away at Huddersfield Town.

Steven Fletcher’s winning goal moved Wrexham back to within two points of Wycombe Wanderers in the League One automatic promotion places and the dream of Championship football next season is still very much alive.

It would be the third successive promotion for Phil Parkinson and his team and one step closer to Rob McElhenney’s ultimate goal of reaching the Premier League.

However, club legends such as Paul Mullin and Ollie Palmer are being discarded during that process and the Wrexham owners and fans have been given a stark warning that the club needs to ensure it is ready for the lofty heights of their ambition.

Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney’s pursuit of promotion driven by ‘Welcome to Wrexham’ series

As per the Daily Mail, journalist Ian Herbert has been discussing the growing sense around the club that the desperation to reach the Championship is not solely for footballing reasons.

Herbert believes that the motivation and reason behind Wrexham’s big spending in January and other transfer windows is to make the documentary series of ‘Welcome to Wrexham‘ more appealing to an audience.

Promotion to the Championship would make season 4 of the documentary much more watchable and would then virtually secure a season 5 with interest rapidly increasing in the Red Dragons.

The journalist fires a warning to the club and its fans that the club’s infrastructure is not yet ready for the second tier of English football. Michael Williamson has a plan to improve training facilities.

Despite plans for a new Kop stand at the Racecourse Ground, Herbert believes there is still a long way to go for Wrexham as a club and fears that their rise is coming too quickly.

In addition to the fears about Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney’s true motivations, Herbert also discussed the worry that other clubs have in the past fallen from grace.

Herbert writes: “When a descent follows a rise, the momentum can be hard to halt, if the club’s core isn’t strong.” He then points out the example of Yeovil Town, who in recent years gained promotion to the Championship and then fell back down to the National League.

Whilst it is a ride that Wrexham fans deserve and should enjoy, there is always that trepidation in the back of the mind that considers what might happen if the project were to start going south.

Of course, promotion is the aim for the club and they are in a great position to achieve that however, another season of consolidation would not be the end of the world and it is important for all at Wrexham to acknowledge that.
