Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney are looking to take Wrexham to the next level but their plans are garnering concern.

Wrexham have the weekend off due to the FA Cup and will not return to action until January 16th versus Shrewsbury Town.

Phil Parkinson has gone on a scouting mission over the weekend, looking to prepare for the full return of League One football.

The Red Dragons are third in the division at present, only behind second-place Wycombe Wanderers via goal difference.

Their rise up the Football League ladder under Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney has been nothing short of remarkable but the American actors still want more.

Former Wrexham owners concerned about Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney

Reynolds and McElhenney took control of the Welsh side from their Supporters Trust in February 2021.

The Wrexham Supporters Trust unanimously voted to sell the club to the Hollywood duo in November 2020, with Rob and Ryan receiving 98.6 percent of the votes cast.

However, the Red Dragons’ former owners have now expressed concern regarding Reynolds and McElhenney’s plans to get Wrexham into the Welsh League Cup.

Entry into the competition would be huge for the club as it will give them a much, much easier path to European football.

However, as per Wales Online, the WST have expressed concern about the plan potentially threatening their position in the EFL.

They wrote in a statement: “The board’s position is that while we’d love to see Wrexham play in European competitions again, if that meant that our continued membership of the EFL was in any way threatened we are against it.”

What Phil Parkinson said about Wrexham entering Welsh League Cup

If the plans are given the go-ahead, Wrexham will be competing with Swansea City, Cardiff City and Newport County as EFL sides in the Welsh League Cup.

Only the top seven teams in the Premier League gain access to European football, so it’s easy to see why Rob and Ryan would prefer this route.

And while the WST have expressed concern about entering the competition, Phil Parkinson backed the Welsh League Cup plan in October 2024.

He said: “To have that opportunity to get into Europe again for the club would be amazing,” said Parkinson. Hopefully that comes to fruition.”
