Wrexham have recruited well under Rob McElhenney and Ryan Reynolds but there have been a few big transfer flops move to Wales over the years.
Rob McElhenney and Ryan Reynolds have supported Wrexham heavily in the transfer market since their arrival in 2021.
The American duo have broken the club’s transfer record on multiple occasions, most recently doing so twice in August 2024.
Ollie Rathbone arrived for a then-club-record fee of £500,000 from Rotherham United before Modou Faal was signed for £590,000 a couple of weeks later.
However, while things are looking up at the Racecourse Ground now, there have been some major flops signed throughout Wrexham’s history and we have picked up some of the biggest below.

Ian Rush
Ian Rush is one of the most iconic strikers in English football and remains Liverpool’s all-time record goalscorer to this day.
He won 20 trophies with the Reds so when the Red Dragons managed to land the Wales native on a free transfer in 1998, fans will have been thrilled.
However, despite scoring 359 goals and providing 111 assists throughout his career, Rush flopped at Wrexham, failing to provide a single goal contribution in 22 appearances before leaving for free in 1999.
Luke McNicholas
Luke McNicholas is the only player on this list to have signed in the McElhenney and Reynolds era.
The goalkeeper arrived from Irish side Sligo Rovers in January 2024 and is currently the club’s 15th-most expensive signing, as per Transfermarkt.
However, McNicholas has only made three appearances for Wrexham since arriving and has spent the first half of 2024/25 out on loan in the National League with Rochdale.

Richard Hope
Richard Hope joined Wrexham in 2007 after an excellent spell with rival Shrewsbury Town.
However, despite helping Shrewsbury reach the League Two play-off finals the campaign prior, Hope greatly underperformed as captain.
He made 36 appearances for the club and was part of the team that saw Wrexham relegated out of the EFL for the first time in their history.
Hope left Wales shortly after their relegation, signing for Grimsby Town on a free.
Lamine Sakho
Wrexham signed Lamine Sakho in 2009 on a free transfer and big things were expected of the former Marseille and Leeds United man.
However, the attacker ended up scoring just one goal in 19 appearances and will likely be mostly known by fans for being sent off after deciding to headbutt an opposition player.
Sakho took a career break after leaving Wales in March 2010 and hung up his playing boots in 2015.
