Wrexham have made some incredible transfers in recent years as they have risen from mid-table National League obscurity to League One promotion contenders.

Wrexham were able to lure strikers Paul Mullin and Ollie Palmer into the National League and former club captain Ben Tozer from higher levels to help with the project of the club.

Owners Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney want to guide the club to the Premier League one day and know that bringing in players of high quality is essential in order to be able to achieve that goal.

Phil Parkinson could still add some excellent free agents to his squad after naming only 21 players in his latest EFL squad but it is a former blockbuster signing that has been speaking about his arrival at the club and a ‘brutally honest’ chat with the Wrexham boss.

Ben Foster reveals he was ‘grilled’ by Phil Parkinson before signing for Wrexham

Speaking on the latest edition of Fozcast, former Wrexham goalkeeper Ben Foster has opened up about signing for the club back in 2023 and a revealing chat with Phil Parkinson.

Foster stated: “I was properly on the back foot at nearly 40 years old, when I had Phil Parkinson grilling me. He was very clear with me and very honest. He said, listen, if you’re coming here just for a bit of PR, then that’s not what we’re looking for. It’s not going to work.”

The former Premier League shot-stopper then shared the moment he knew that Wrexham was the right club to bring him out of retirement.

Foster explained: “If you’re coming here to work hard and help get us over the line, then this can be something. As soon as I heard those words, and I looked into his eyes, I thought that this is serious business here. I liked it.”

Foster made 35 appearances for Wrexham across two spells

Foster first joined the Red Dragons back in the 2004-05 season when Wrexham were battling away in League One.

The goalkeeper then went on to have an illustrious career with the likes of Manchester United and Watford in the Premier League and played eight times for England.

He re-joined the club in 2023 following an injury to Rob Lainton and came out of retirement to make 12 appearances that helped guide Parkinson’s side back into the EFL.

The England international retired after four games in League Two as he felt it was the right time for the club to move on past him and for him to settle back into retirement, Wrexham will always hold a special place for Ben Foster.
