Wrexham are preparing to welcome Stockport in another crucial League One clash in the fight for promotion.

Phil Parkinson’s side go into the game off the back of a brilliant 1-0 win at Wycombe and now prepare to welcome historic rivals Stockport to the Racecourse Ground.

Stockport prevented Paul Mullin from equalling a goal record that was matched only by Alan Shearer in scoring 25 goals in four or more consecutive seasons.

Mullin’s participation may have increased in likelihood given that Wrexham are carrying a number of knocks heading into the game and the Red Dragons will know only too well how tough Stockport will be.

Humphrey Ker gave brutal Stockport verdict

Speaking on the ‘Welcome to Wrexham’ documentary, Humphrey Ker the club’s community director once gave a stark and honest verdict on the relationship between Wrexham and Stockport.

The two clubs faced off in the last match of the League Two campaign last season and having already won the title, Stockport came to North Wales still determined to get one over on the Red Dragons.

Speaking on season 3, episode 8 of the popular documentary Ker stated: “Last game of the season is Stockport, there is a little bit of needle between Stockport and Wrexham.

“Losing 5-0 to Stockport earlier in the season was one of our real shocks to the system. We’re going to tangle with these guys again next year and beating them in front of our fans seems like a great way to end the season.”

Wrexham won the game 2-1 to end their season in fine style, goals coming from Ollie Palmer and Andy Cannon after Parkinson’s side fell behind in the first half.

Wrexham have clashed with Stockport since the National League

The rivalry between the two clubs stems from both sides battling to become National League champions back in 2022.

After the takeover from Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney in 2021, their first full season at the club ended in heartbreak as Stockport pipped them to the title and Wrexham lost out in the playoffs.

Stockport have taunted Wrexham in the past with a number of gimmicks during their matches, supporters flew a plane over the Racecourse last season reminding the Welsh club who was champions of League Two.

However, three points in their upcoming clash could move Wrexham clear in the race for League One promotion and effectively put Stockport out the picture completely, no extra motivation is needed for the Red Dragons than that.
