Not everyone appears to be a fan of Wrexham owners Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney.

Hollywood duo Rob McElhenney and Ryan Reynolds took over Wrexham in February 2021.

Wrexham AFC’s Supporters Trust agreed to make McElhenney and Reynolds their owners via the pair’s joint venture, the RR McReynolds Company.

However, the Red Dragons later announced in August 2023 that the shareholding in the club was now transferred to Wrexham Holdings.

Since the duo took charge of the Welsh side, Wrexham have enjoyed a historic rise up the football league ladder.

Phil Parkinson was brought in ahead of Reynolds and McElhenney’s first full season as owners and has guided the club all the way from the National League to League One.

Part of the reason for Wrexham’s success over the last few years has been their big spending.

Wrexham made Ollie Palmer their record signing in 2022, spending around £300,000.

Bolton manager aims dig at Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney

Wrexham made 18 signings during the 2022/23 season when they were promoted to League Two.

Another 11 additions were made in 2023/24 as the Red Dragons earned promotion to League One, including James McClean for around £250,000.

Now, it appears Bolton Wanderers manager Ian Evatt has aimed a spending dig at Reynolds and McElhenney.

When discussing Bolton’s transfer business this summer, Evatt appeared to aim a dig at Wrexham, suggesting there are clubs who have spent money he never thought he would see spent in League One, as per Bolton News.

He said: “I have told you we have offered some big transfer fees and contracts out there – unfortunately other clubs can still offer more.

“That is not just in the Championship, it is at our level as well. There are a couple of anomalies, and I don’t need to name names, but they have spent money I didn’t think I’d ever see spent in League One.

“You are up against that but if people are making a football decision. If that decision becomes financial, they are probably not the right player for us, that’s the way I see it.

“We want players here who want to be here for football reasons, to get this club back to where it belongs, not for financial benefit.”

Wrexham may struggle in League One even with financial backing

While Evatt is clearly not happy with clubs like Wrexham and their spending, he probably does not have to worry too much about the Welsh side in 2024/25.

James Jones outlined Wrexham’s promotion ambitions for 2024/25 recently but a third-successive promotion for the club does seem unlikely.

Wrexham are now competing with quality sides who have just been relegated from the Championship.

The likes of Bolton have also had several years to build a competitive squads for League One, while Wrexham are entering the division for the first time in their history.

It would be quite the fairy-tale story if Wrexham could secure a spot in the Championship for 2025/26 but even with their high spending, their squad probably isn’t good enough to achieve that right now.

Wrexham have been linked with Sheffield Wednesday striker Bailey Cadamarteri recently and more additions are expected at the Racecourse Ground before deadline day.

But even with all their new signings, it is hard to see Wrexham going up in 2024/25.
