Bolton Wanderers fans happy with point in ‘scrappy’ draw vs Wrexham, but Red Dragons’ major weakness was obvious

Bolton Wanderers took a point from Wrexham this weekend, and their fans have had their say on the Red Dragons credentials.

Wrexham were looking to put their EFL Trophy heartbreak behind them this weekend with a League One clash against Bolton proving the perfect distraction.

However, try as they might, Phil Parkinson’s men couldn’t put the ball in the net and the score ended 0-0 with both teams taking a point a piece from the game at the Racecourse Ground.

The point did push Wrexham closer to their promotion dreams, but the Red Dragons will always look at a home draw as a missed opportunity for more.

Wrexham are ‘better’ than Bolton, but wasted their chances

Bolton fans have had their say on the match, taking to social media to offer their appreciation for a hard-earned point away from home.

One fan said: “Under [Ian] Evatt we would have lost 3-0. Scrappy game but heading in the right direction.”

Another suggested Bolton had grabbed a “solid point at a tough place to go,” while one supporter added Steven Schumacher’s side were “extremely lucky to get a point.”

However, that lucky escape for Bolton is emphasised by the fans’ belief that Wrexham could and should have buried their chances on the day.

One supporter wrote, “Two shots on target combined from both teams is poor. Both missed sitters,” while another boasted that they “never felt in danger really during the game.”

Indeed, the inability to score is a problem within the Wrexham squad right now, and Bolton fans were quick to highlight how that issue could cost the Red Dragons in the promotion race.

“Can’t play like that against Birmingham, they won’t miss the open goals that Wrexham did,” one Bolton fan wrote.

Another admitted Wrexham are a “better attacking,” before adding, “On another day Wrexham could have scored three or four. Not sure I’d fancy them in the play-offs.”

Wrexham cannot afford to keep missing golden opportunities

Wrexham are now two points behind Wycombe Wanderers in second place in the League One table, and have a really good opportunity to grab that automatic promotion place before the season is over.

If they do manage that, it will likely be in spite of the fact the Red Dragons have simply not been good enough in front of goal all year.

The partnership of Sam Smith and Jay Rodriguez isn’t working, Paul Mullin is a shadow of his former self, while Ollie Palmer is seemingly banished to the peripheries at Wrexham now.

It says it all that Max Cleworth is Wrexham’s joint top scorer this season, with the defender’s eight goals taking him level with attacking midfielder, Elliot Lee who, it’s worth noting, has barely played for the last two months.

Hopefully, the goals start flowing for Smith soon, or Wrexham may find themselves coming up short in the race for promotion.
