Promotion boost, Sebastian Revan impressed and more – five things learned from Wrexham vs Bolton

Wrexham were looking to take one step closer to automatic promotion when they faced Bolton Wanderers on Saturday.

Wrexham’s league form in 2025 has been mixed, but they did manage to secure a 2-1 victory over Mansfield Town in their previous outing.

That win moved them three points behind second-place Wycombe Wanderers, who also kicked off at 12:30pm on Saturday.

Wycombe travelled to league leaders Birmingham City on March 1st, and given they were expected to drop points, it was imperative the Red Dragons picked up the win at the Racecourse Ground.

When all was said and done, Wrexham drew 0-0 with Bolton. Here are five things we learned from the clash on March 1st.

Paul Mullin is now a fringe player

When the team news came out at 11:30am, it was somewhat surprising to see that Paul Mullin was dropped once more.

Wrexham fans spoke out on Mullin and his exclusion from the starting lineup and the bench, questioning why he wasn’t picked.

The 30-year-old has been a key player since his arrival in 2021, but the two new striker signings in January seemingly mean he’s now a fringe star.

Mullin hasn’t featured in League One for five games now and didn’t even start the EFL Trophy meeting with Peterbrough United in midweek.

Matty James and George Dobson playing together was bold call

Andy Cannon picked up an injury recently and is now expected to be out for the remainder of the campaign.

This has left Parkinson slightly short in midfield, and in turn, Matty James and George Dobson started as two of Wrexham’s three-man set up against Bolton.

The duo have struggled at times when playing alongside each other this season, with one expert suggesting Dobson and James shouldn’t play together.

They were in from the off against Bolton, however, and the bold call from Parkinson that largely did not pay off. Wrexham’s play was slow and their ability to create chances was hampered. It might be time for George Evans to get a run in the team.

Sebastian Revan knocking on door to become regular starter

Sebastian Revan joined Wrexham from Aston Villa in the summer of 2024 and had struggled for form and regular minutes this term.

However, Revan earned praise from one BBC pundit for his showing in the win over Mansfield last weekend, and he was once again impressive on Saturday.

He previously lacked much of a threat going forward but was very direct and produced some quality crosses against Bolton.

The defender was only brought back into the side owing to James McClean’s injury issue, but he may have done enough to warrant more regular minutes going forward.

Bolton fans don’t know Wrexham were in Europe

The game itself was not the most entertaining but both sets of supporters managed to keep themselves entertained.

Bolton fans could be heard chanting about Wrexham never playing in Europe, which they, of course, have many times.

And the home faithful quickly corrected the mistake with a chant about their opposition never playing in Porto.

Wrexham handed promotion boost

As already mentioned, Saturday’s meeting with Bolton was a great chance for Wrexham to boost their promotion chances.

Wycombe did indeed lose to Birmingham in one of the other early League One kick-offs, meaning the gap is now closed to two points.

Of course, a win for Wrexham would have been much better but it’s still a step in the right direction.
