Burton Albion suffer major blow as Wrexham now gear up for huge League One meeting

Wrexham will be looking to bounce back this weekend after suffering a shock 2-2 draw with Cambridge United on Tuesday.

The Welsh side, who have beaten two of the top five in the last few weeks, should have been favourites to see off the relegation-threatened outfit.

However, despite taking a very early lead, Wrexham drew 2-2 with Cambridge United.

Thankfully, third-place Wycombe Wanderers also dropped two points in their midweek meeting with Shrewsbury Town.

But if Phil Parkinson and co. are to go up automatically, they can’t afford to be dropping points against sides like that on a regular basis.

Next up for Wrexham is a 12:30pm kick-off on Saturday against League One strugglers Burton Albion.

Burton dealt Ryan Sweeney blow before Wrexham

Burton are 21st in the third tier right now, sitting just three points above the relegation zone going into the weekend.

The Brewers were, like Wrexham, in action on Tuesday, April 1st, taking on Leyton Orient.

Surprisingly, Burton were able to come away with a 2-1 win on the night but did suffer a big blow midway through the match.

Captain Ryan Sweeney was forced to withdraw late in the first 45 after he collided with Diallang Jaiyesimi.

Speaking to the club’s media post-match, Gary Bowyer has confirmed that Sweeney had to go to hospital following the injury.

He said: “He’s gone off to hospital to be assessed. We’ll find out more about that tomorrow.

“It’s an unbelievable selfless act of bravery, he’s a warrior with a capital W.

“Fair play to the rest of the lads because they stepped up and did it for the captain.”

Wrexham head-to-head record vs Burton

Wrexham should be favourites for the Saturday afternoon kick-off, but Burton’s win over an Orient side pushing to make the top-six suggests they can’t be underestimated.

The previous meeting between these two sides saw the Reds come away with a 1-0 win on December 7th, 2024.

Elliot Lee scored from a corner to see Wrexham beat Burton on that occasion, with the two clubs only meeting twice prior to 2024/25.

They knocked the Welsh outfit of the Football League Trophy in late 2023, while the Red Dragons picked up a 2-0 FA Cup win during their first clash all the way back in 1977.
