Wrexham were beaten 3-2 by West Bromwich Albion on Saturday afternoon as Phil Parkinson suffered a second straight Championship defeat.

The Championship was always going to be a huge step up for Wrexham, and that has certainly been the case so far.

Wrexham were beaten at Southampton in heartbreaking fashion on the opening weekend, conceding two late goals in a 2-1 defeat.

Phil Parkinson was hoping to hit back with a victory, but tasted defeat again as Wrexham lost 3-2 to West Bromwich Albion.

Ryan Reynolds was in town as Wrexham were made to pay for some sloppy defending against the Baggies.

Two defeats in two games shouldn’t be cause for too much panic just yet, but Wrexham are learning some harsh lessons at this level.

West Bromwich Albion boss hails Wrexham’s Kieffer Moore

Wrexham fans were given a surprise when Parkinson named his starting lineup against West Brom.

Kieffer Moore picked up an injury against Southampton, and many expected him to miss the visit of the Baggies.

Instead, Moore started up front against West Brom and, rather unsurprisingly, caused problems with his aerial ability.

Moore’s sheer persistence almost paved the way for Nathan Broadhead to score in the second half, and the Welshman put himself about as ever.

Baggies boss Ryan Mason has praised Moore while speaking to BBC Radio West Midlands, hailing the Wrexham striker as an ‘extremely good player’.

Mason added that Moore poses real problems to central defenders, praising Nat Phillips and George Campbell for standing up to the challenge.

“Very positive, because they had to deal with a lot,” said Mason on his defensive pairing.

“Obviously, Kieffer Moore is an extremely good player and he poses you some problems, so for George to come and adapt so quickly, I’m really happy for him,” he added.

Kieffer Moore set for huge Wrexham role

Moore was outstanding at Southampton, and his injury appeared to be a rather unwelcome blow on the opening day.

Parkinson accepts that Moore needs more training, but his desire to throw the striker straight into the XI against West Brom just highlights his importance.

Wrexham usually play with a target man under Parkinson, with Ollie Palmer taking on that role for most of Wrexham’s rise.

Palmer has now been told he can leave Wrexham, leaving Moore to take on a major role as the focal point in Parkinson’s attack.

Moore provides the perfect foil for the likes of Josh Windass and Nathan Broadhead, and he will cause no end of problems for many Championship defenders this season.
