‘Costing the club’… Wrexham fans have a lot to say after Wycombe deal promotion hopes a blow vs Rotherham

Wrexham are looking to secure a historic third straight promotion in the 2024/25 season.

After winning promotion from the National League in 2022/23, the Red Dragons wasted little time in continuing their climb up the EFL.

A closely contested end to the previous campaign saw Wrexham finish second in League Two, just behind their upcoming opponents, Stockport County.

2024/25 is set to be another very tense contest to secure automatic promotion, with only one place really available after Birmingham City ran away with the league and will go up as champions.

Standing in the Welsh outfit’s way this term is a Wycombe Wanderers side who have proven to be the surprise package of the season.

Wrexham beat Wycombe 1-0 on Saturday thanks to a late goal from January addition Sam Smith.

That win saw Phil Parkinson’s side climb up to second but the Chairboys still had a game in hand, which they played out against Rotherham United on March 18th.

Wrexhams fans react as Wycombe Wanderers beat Rotherham United

Rotherham actually took the lead in Tuesday’s fixture before star man Richard Kone equalised just three minutes later.

There were then three goals from the 90th minute onward, seeing Wycombe come away with a 3-2 win to knock Wrexham back down to second.

Fans of the Welsh outfit have since taken to social media to make their feelings about the result known.

One fan suggested their losses, some of which were surprising, are costing the Red Dragons: “Those 8 losses prove to be costing the club….”

Another echoed that the recent defeat to Reading has not helped: “Blowing the game against Reading killed us.”

While a third thinks goal difference could prove to be Wrexham’s downfall: “Goal difference is gonna kill us. I’ve been fretting about that since the start of the season.”

However, while there was some negativity on the back of the result, other supporters were much more upbeat.

One wrote: “Just have to win against the lower table. Wycombe have a much tougher road, but they do have Kone. Play different when he’s on the pitch.”

A second also mentioned Wycombe’s difficult run of games: “Got a harder run in than us we just need to keep winning and that starts at the fortress Cae Ras on Saturday! Sing your ——- hearts out and back the boys”.

How Wrexham fixtures compare to Wycombe

Wrexham face Stockport on Saturday and will move back up to second if they avoid defeat as Wycombe don’t play this weekend.

But Mike Dodds’ men will still have a game in hand ahead of their return to action vs Lincoln City.

However, the battle for second is expected to go down to the wire, and could be Wrexham’s for the taking given how tough Wycombe’s final six games are.

Apart from a meeting with Stevenage, Wycombe will only face sides still currently battling for a play-off place in their final six matches.

Wrexham, on the other hand, only take on Charlton Athletic and Stockport from the top nine in their remaining matches.
