Phil Parkinson finally speaks out on Paul Mullin and Ollie Palmer Wrexham roles after zero minutes in nine

Ollie Palmer and Paul Mullin have fallen heavily out of favour in the last few months at Wrexham.

Paul Mullin arrived at the Racecourse Ground in the summer of 2021, signing on a free transfer from Cambridge United.

Ollie Palmer followed through the door six months later, being pried away from AFC Wimbledon in January 2022.

Together, the duo went on to dominate the National League and help Wrexham secure promotion back into the EFL for the first time in 15 years.

The centre-forwards continued to impress in League Two as the Red Dragons won back-to-back promotions.

But less than 12 months later, Mullin and Palmer have had transfer interest and are no longer featuring for Phil Parkinson.

Phil Parkinson addresses Paul Mullin and Ollie Palmer Wrexham absence

They have both scored just three league goals each in 2024/25, leading Wrexham to sign Jay Rodriguez and Sam Smith in January.

Neither long-time star has made a single appearance in League One during the club’s last nine fixtures.

This has seen speculation mount, with Mullin addressing rumours of a bust-up with Parkinson on social media last week.

Despite all the speculation, Parkinson has remained coy on why the duo are no longer even involved in matchday squads.

But, finally, when speaking this week, as per Leader Live, the Wrexham manager has adressed Mullin and Palmer’s absence, confirming they are still training with the group and waiting for their chance.

He said: “We’ve just got to make sure that we get the balance of the bench right which is absolutely key for us and every day, we continue to monitor the lads and look at everyone training. Who’s looking sharp, who’s looking ready.

“The lads out of the team like Mulls and Ollie, who have both made significant contributions for us, they’re right with the group training hard every day and waiting for the moment because you never know when that moment is going to come, and you’ve got to be prepared for it as Lewis Brunt was at the weekend.”

Phil Parkinson explains Wrexham decision vs Wycombe Wanderers

Wrexham beat Wycombe Wanderers 1-0 on Saturday, climbing up to second in League One.

They have since been knocked back down to third after Wycombe won their game in hand on Tuesday.

But it was still an important result and leaves the Welsh outfit only outside the automatic promotion places via goal difference.

On his decision to select Jack Marriott as the striker option off the bench alongside Steven Fletcher for that game, Parkinson explained: “Wycombe have played quite a high-line and we felt Jack would be more suited to exploit that, but he didn’t get on because we had a break in the game and Sam was freshened up.

“We just look at the opposition and which, as a bench, can be most impactful in the game.

“Over the last few seasons, the goals we’ve got from the bench have been no excellent and in these last nine games the bench is going to be crucial.”
