Now a former Wrexham star has seemingly had a similar awakening, as he is now set to embark on a new sport after his retirement.
Several footballers are currently interested in golf as a pastime, while many others have seen the benefits of padel.
A summer target for Wrexham, John Egan plans to return to Gaelic football once he retires from football in England, as he has a strong yearning to return to Ireland to play for his local team.

Former Wrexham star Steven Fletcher announced his retirement from football only a matter of days ago but has turned to golf for his next chapter.
Fletcher spoke about how Rob Mac ‘begged’ him to stay at Wrexham, and then he was released from the club only two days later, meaning he was searching for a new club.
It was believed that Fletcher would return to Hibernian in Scotland; however, he opted to call it a day in football.
Now he has started a YouTube career with former England international Phil Jagielka, with the pair playing golf, with the duo looking to make it a fun and jovial experience.

Fletcher is not the first player to have changed sports, and he won’t be the last, with there being countless examples throughout history.
One example is Petr Cech, who would play ice hockey in the UK, playing for the likes of the Belfast Giants.
