Expert highlights two key decisions that show exactly why Wrexham will win promotion to the Premier League

Rob McElhenney and Ryan Reynolds have taken Wrexham on a remarkable journey and a future in the Premier League could be on the cards.

Wrexham have never played in the Premier League during their storied history.

The 2003/04 season saw them competing in the Second Division, which was then rebranded as League One in the 2004/05 campaign.

Under their current owners, however, the Red Dragons are on a quest to make it all the way to the top tier of English football.

Rob McElhenney and Ryan Reynolds appointed Phil Parkinson as Wrehxam manager in 2022 and after losing in the play-offs during his first season at the Racecourse Ground, he has now taken the Welsh outfit up two tiers in two seasons.

Wrexham are currently battling it out in League One and sit second in the third tier ahead of their upcoming league fixture with Rotherham United.

Why Wrexham will get promoted to the Premier League

Reynolds and McElhenney have been told why Wrexham will not win the League One title in the current season but they could still secure a place in the Championship for the first time ever by winning the play-offs or finishing second – their current league position.

The American duo are unlikely to want to stop there, however, with two key appointments showing exactly why the club will eventually make it to the Premier League, according to one Wrexham expert.

Speaking on the Rob. Ryan. Red podcast, journalist Richard Fay was discussing Wrexham appointing Rob Faulkner as head of business and communications and it is his belief that said deal, along with the previous addition of Michael Williamson, reaffirms that the club ‘are going to get to the Premier League one day’.

He said: “I mean whether you like it or not with not going to be the same little old Wrexham where you could maybe have the access you used to before, for better and for worse

“I think on that one it is just the nature of big business and getting bigger as a football club. I really hope that we don’t ever lose those core values and I hope that Rob and Ryan are able to hammer them home through their appointments they’re not just the facade

“I think we obviously want the best interests of the club at heart but what an appointment this [Rob Faulkner] looks on paper. Again, this is more evidence for me I think that when this appointment was made and we had Mike Williamson as well, they were sort of reaffirming appointments to me that we are going to get to the Premier League one day, like we just are.

“We’re not just going to be happy to tread water in League One. Look at our infrastructure and the appointments we’ve got off the field. Is there a team outside the Premier League who can compete with us on those fronts for experience? It’s a very exciting time isn’t it and like I said, for me, this just seems that by hook or by crook we’re going to find ourselves at the top table some way or another very soon.”

What Wrexham must do to win promotion

While the Premier League dream is still on the cards, Wrexham’s current focus must be the 2024/25 League One season.

The Red Dragons have had a decent start to the campaign but they need to improve a couple of things this term.

In particular, the club’s record away from the Racecourse must get better if they are to compete with the best in League One.

Wrexham have already drawn two and lost two on the road this campaign – a record that simply is not good enough if they want to battle big-spending Birmingham City for top spot.
