He led Wrexham to promotion and five trophies, now he could prevent major Birmingham City meeting

Wrexham and Birmingham City have formed quite the rivalry on and off the field this season.

Wrexham secured promotion from League Two in 2023/24, while Birmingham City were relegated from the Championship.

With over half the campaign gone, it looks as though it will be the Blues who win the League One title this season.

However, Phil Parkinson’s side remain in with a shot at earning automatic promotion in second place.

The Midlands outfit have proven to be too strong for Rob McElhenney and Ryan Reynolds’ club in the league, earning a 3-1 win in 2024 before Wrexham and Birmingham drew 1-1 at the Racecourse Ground last month.

Away from the pitch McElhenney and Reynolds have formed a rivalry with Tom Brady, who is invested in the League One leaders.

As a result, all three men would no doubt love to meet once more in 2024/25, especially if it happened at Wembley.

Wrexham legend could prevent Birmingham City final at Wembley

Both teams are still going strong in the EFL Trophy this season with Wrexham beating Bolton Wanderers 1-0 on Tuesday to book their place in the semi-finals.

Birmingham, meanwhile, face Bradford City in the last four and, of course, if both teams win their upcoming fixtures, will meet in the showpiece at Wembley in April.

However, a former Wrexham player is now standing in the way of that potentially happening.

Darren Ferguson, son of Manchester United legend Sir Alex, joined the Red Dragons in 1999 and made 310 appearances for them.

Ferguson captained Wrexham when they won promotion to Divison Two in 2002/03, while also winning four FAW Premier Cups and one Football League Trophy when at the Racecourse Ground.

However, the 53-year-old could now end his former team’s dream of reaching the EFL Trophy final as he is the manager of Peterborough United, whom they are set to face in the semi-finals on February 26th.

What Darren Ferguson has said about Wrexham

Wrexham and Peterborough have already faced off twice in the league this season, with the former coming out on top on both occasions.

Parkinson and co. beat The Posh 2-0 at their ground in August before securing a 1-0 win in the reverse fixture on January 4th.

Following that tie, Ferguson praised Wrexham, labelling them ‘a powerful team’.

He said: “We competed really well against them because they’re a powerful team. We had the best chance of the first half – I don’t know how it’s not gone in, it’s gone off his legs and gone in the keeper’s hands.

“But unfortunately I’ve seen it many times here – Wrexham found a way of getting a late goal. They’re very good at it.”
