Wrexham have seen their own European plans blow up in their face this year.

It emerged earlier this season that Wrexham wanted to take part in the Welsh League Cup going forward along with the other Welsh sides currently competing in the EFL.

If the deal had gone ahead, the Red Dragons would have had a clear path to European football as the winner of that competition earns a place in the Europa Conference League.

Wrexham could have earned millions from the plan, while also giving their fans and players a taste of European football for the first time in decades.

However, opposition fans hit out as Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney’s European dream was ended when the FA turned down the proposal last month.

While their hopes of securing any form of European football in the near future are now over, one former player did enjoy tremendous success playing on the continent.

Wrexham sold Joey Jones to Liverpool for £110,000

Born in Llandudno, Wales, Joey Jones began his illustrious playing career with Wrexham in 1971.

He made his debut for the Red Dragons at just 17 years of age in the Welsh League Cup and went on to feature 98 times for Wrexham.

Jones scored two goals during his first spell at the Racecourse and was key to them beating Cardiff City in the 1975 FAW Welsh Cup final.

After a prolific initial spell with the now Hollywood club, Wrexham sold Jones to Liverpool in 1975 for a reported fee of £110,00, as per Leader Live.

The former left-back only spent three years at Anfield but went on to enjoy much success, the majority of which came in Europe.

Joey Jones had three more spells at Wrexham

After dominating Europe with Liverpool, Wrexham bought Jones back from the Reds in 1978 for £210,000.

He played 146 games and scored eight goals in his second spell before stints with Chelsea and Huddersfield Town.

The now 69-year-old returned to the Racecourse at the end of his playing career, notching a further 132 appearances and 11 goals between 1987 and 1992.

After hanging up his playing boots, Jones had a brief stint as Wrexham’s caretaker manager before taking up roles as their U18s and reserve team coach. The ex-defender eventually retired in 2017.
