Man Utd icon Rio Ferdinand made an interesting offer to Ryan Reynolds, Wrexham could do with it right now

Wrexham have seen a new problem arise at the club in the last couple of months and Rio Ferdinand may have been able to help solve it.

It’s a quiet weekend for Wrexham fans as the FA Cup means their meeting with Leyton Orient has been delayed.

The Red Dragons will return to action on Tuesday evening, however, facing Bolton Wanderers in the quarter-final of the EFL Trophy.

After that, Wrexham’s League One campaign gets back underway next Saturday when they clash with Northampton Town.

The Welsh side began this weekend third and four points off second-place Wycombe Wanderers but the battle for automatic promotion remains very tight.

Wrexham are currently the lowest scorers in the top four, which was to be expected as none of their centre-forwards – barring new signing Sam Smith – have netted more than six in the league this term.

However, they had been able to maintain a place in the top two for much of the season owing to their previously superb defensive record.

Manchester United legend Rio Ferdinand’s offer to Wrexham co-owner Ryan Reynolds

Of late though, the Red Dragons have seen their previously invulnerable defensive record take a battering.

In fact, apart from a 1-0 win over Peterborough United on January 4th, Wrexham have now kept just one clean sheet in their last 10 League One matches and just one in 11 across all competitions.

There are a variety of reasons for this but Eoghan O’Connell’s poor form and Dan Scarr’s Wrexham struggles have really not helped.

As a result, it probably would have been useful if Wrexham co-owner Ryan Reynolds took Manchester United legend Rio Ferdinand up on his offer last year.

Ferdinand made an offer to Reynolds during an interview in July 2024, with the Canadian trying to get the ex-centre-back to come out of retirement and play for his team.

The Englishman, as was to be expected, admitted he can’t play anymore but did offer to help Wrexham out off the pitch.

Ferdinand stated: “I can’t play no more, man, but I would help you off the pitch. I would help you, man,” to which Reynolds responded: “I could use some of that, too.”

Wrexham defensive record compared to League One rivals

Prior to their recent struggles to keep out goals, Wrexham did have the best defensive record in the third tier at one point this term.

However, Birmingham City’s 19 goals shipped in 27 matches now sees them boasting the tightest backline.

Wrexham have conceded the second-fewest (25), but one clean sheet in 11 is less than ideal for a team who have faltered at the other end of the pitch.

Wycombe have so far shipped 30 goals in 29, Stockport County have conceded 28 in 29 and Huddersfield Town’s 26 in 28 is the third-best record at the time of writing.
