A number of quality players have lined out for Wrexham over the years, one of which ending up playing for a top Premier League club.

Ritchie de Laet played just three times for Wrexham in the early stages of his footballing career.

But the defender went on to have a prolific career, which included winning a Premier League medal with Leicester City and securing promotion from the Championship with Middlesbrough in the same season.

Elsewhere, Wrexham sold Danny Ward to Liverpool for £100,000 and he’s since played regular football in the top flight of England and is currently on the books of Leicester.

Rolling back the years, Ian Rush joined the Red Dragons at the back end of his playing career but struggled to replicate the top form he had showcased at Liverpool for so many years.

Rush and Ward are not the only notable names to line out for Wrexham and the soon-to-be two-time Premier League champions, however.

Joe Allen played for Wrexham

Joe Allen began his playing career on the books of Swansea City, for whom he made 221 appearances, scored 11 goals, and provided 13 assists.

During his stint with Swansea, the midfielder was sent on a short-term loan to Wrexham in October 2008.

Ahead of linking up with the Red Dragons, Allen said at the time: “I’m looking forward to it. It will be good to get some more game time under my belt.”

“I obviously know Dean Saunders from the Welsh set up. He’s got the same philosophy as Roberto Martinez in that he wants to play football the right way.

“He’s got a good reputation in the game and has the utmost respect from the senior boys in the Welsh squad.

“He’s also got a wealth of experience which hopefully I can tap into during my time at the Racecourse.”

Allen made his debut and scored in a 3-1 win over York City on October 7th, 2008, and started the club’s following league fixture against Mansfield Town, which they won 2-1.

However, he didn’t make another matchday squad for Wrexham and returned to Swansea on November 30th of that year.

Joe Allen secured big move to Liverpool

After establishing himself in the first-team at Swansea, Allen was snapped up by Premier League powerhouse Liverpool on August 10th, 2012, for a fee reported by The Guardian to be £15m.

The now 34-year-old made 132 appearances for the Reds, scoring seven and assisting three before leaving for Stoke City in 2016.

After notching over 200 appearances for Stoke, he returned to the Swans in 2022 on a free transfer.

Allen is still playing semi-regularly in 2024/25, making 16 Championship appearances for the Welsh outfit, the majority of which have come off the bench.
