He was a prolific goalscorer for Wrexham but missed out on Real Madrid move as coach for bizarre reason

Wrexham are flying high in League One this season but their current strikers are struggling for goals.

Steven Fletcher scored as Wrexham lost 2-1 to Shrewsbury Town on Thursday evening, taking his tally for the season up to six.

Away from the former Sunderland man, however, the rest of the Red Dragons’ centre-forwards have been pretty off their game.

Paul Mullin has been criticised by opposition fans this week amid his lack of goals – netting just two in League One.

Elsewhere, Ollie Palmer was axed from the matchday by Phil Parkinson in midweek after a string of subpar showings.

One man who certainly didn’t struggle to find the back of the net during his time at the Racecourse Ground, however, was Andy Mangan.

Andy Mangan was a lethal goalscorer for Wrexham

Mangan began his playing career with Blackpool, being promoted to their senior side in 2004.

He went on to enjoy spells with the likes of Bury and Forest Green, the latter of which sold him to Wrexham in January 2010 for around £10,000.

The now 38-year-old only spent 18 months at the Racecourse but had a very prolific spell.

In total, Managan found the net an impressive 23 times in 67 appearances across all competitions before joining Fleetwood Town in July 2011 on a free transfer.

The Englishman went on to play for the likes of Shrewsbury Town and Tranmere Rovers before hanging up his boots in February 2019 after a second spell with Accrington Stanley.

Andy Mangan missed chance to join Real Madrid

At the end of his playing career, Mangan decided to move into coaching, first joining Fleetwood Town as a youth coach before taking up a position with the first team.

The former striker began the 2024/25 season working as an assistant coach at Stockport County.

He has helped Stockport earn a 1-0 win over Wrexham this term and also missed a major chance to link up with Real Madrid.

As per The Gurdian, in September 2024, Mangan was on the verge of joining Los Blancos to work under legendary manager Carlo Ancelotti.

However, his work permit, which would have taken nine months to process in the post-Brexit era, was rejected by the Spanish government.

Mangan has remained at Stokcpot for the time being but must surely be devastated after missing such a golden opportunity.
