Wrexham could make history under Rob McElhenney and Ryan Reynolds by winning three promotions in a row.

Rob McElhenney and Ryan Reynolds helped Wrexham win their first promotion during the 2022/23 season, finishing top of the National League with 111 points.

The Red Dragons then spent just one campaign in League Two, earning a second-place finish to book their place in League One for 2024/25.

Few expected the Welsh outfit to do the treble but, despite a recent setback against Shrewsbury Town, automatic promotion is still on the cards this term.

Birmingham City are almost certainly taking top spot but second place is very much up for grabs.

Following manager and player exits at Wycombe Wanderers, Huddersfield Town are now Wrexham’s biggest rival for that position.

Rob McElhenney and Ryan Reynolds Wrexham deal could help promotion hopes

Huddersfield are currently four points behind the America-owned club but will overtake them if they win both their games in hand.

The Terriers have also been pretty active in the January transfer window, while Wrexham are yet to make a signing this month.

However, McElhenney and Reynolds have already sanctioned one deal in the 2024/25 season that could boost the club’s hopes of promotion a great deal.

Matty James arrived at the Racecourse Ground in October amid injuries and suspension woes in the Red Dragons’ midfield.

James has excelled at Wrexham and after only being initially signed to a short-term deal, he’s already penned a new contract to keep him in Wales for the remainder of 2024/25.

What Phil Parkinson has said about Matty James

After his arrival at the club, James has been praised as ‘unbelievable’ by Ollie Palmer.

Meanwhile, Parkinson branded James ‘outstanding’ following a stellar showing in a win over Lincoln City in November.

On the midfielder extending his contract, the Wrexham boss said: “I’m pleased we have agreed a deal with Matty. He has done well in his short time at the Club so far and we look forward to working with him going forwards.”

The former Bristol City player was only expected to have a fringe role before being released in December but he’s now taken George Dobson’s place in the starting eleven and if he keeps up the form he’s shown over the last few months, Wrexham should have a much better chance of sealing promotion.
