Wrexham are competing in the Championship this season and Rob Mac and Ryan Reynolds have already outlined their plan.

The Red Dragons are now facing their most difficult challenge yet, trying to secure promotion from the Championship.

It’s widely regarded as one of the most competitive leagues in world football, and unlike in previous seasons, Wrexham are no longer one of the strongest teams.

Promotion in 2025/26 would be amazing and see the Dragons create even more history.

But owners Ryan Reynolds and Rob Mac are not expecting that to happen this term, instead backing Wrexham to reach the Premier League by the end of 2026/27.

With this in mind, we have taken a look back at the last decade of Championship campaigns to get a rough idea of how many points the Dragons will need to earn this season or next year to reach the top flight.

Wrexham predicted Championship points total

Firstly, let’s take a look at how many points Phil Parkinson’s side are expected to earn this season.

According to Opta’s supercomputer, Wrexham will be 21st in the Championship come May.

And they are expected to earn 57.4 points – let’s call that 57 to be safe.

How many points Wrexham need for Championship promotion

57 points would be nowhere near enough to get the club into the automatic promotion places, and still leaves them just shy of the play-offs when looking back at previous seasons.

In the last 10 years, the average points total of a Championship play-off team has been 78.5.

There are, of course, exceptions to this, with Bristol City and Coventry City cracking the top six in 2024/25 with 68 and 69 points respectively.

When it comes to earning a spot in the top two and going up automatically, teams have had to garner an average of 93.45 points.

That means Wrexham would need to win an average of 2.031 points in each of their 46 second-tier matches to go up.

But even that total wouldn’t have been enough last season, with Leeds United and Burnley both notching a century of points, leaving Sheffield United in third place with 90 (92 without their points deduction).
