How many points Wrexham now need per game to win Championship promotion in 25/26

Wrexham are competing in the Championship for the first time since its rebrand and have struggled so far.

A meeting with Norwich City is next up for Wrexham as they look to get their campaign up and running properly.

After a slow start, a much-needed 2-0 win over Millwall gave some hope that the Dragons had found their feet in the second tier.

But they were quickly brought back down to earth last weekend when they were comfortably beaten 3-1 by Queens Park Rangers.

It leaves Wrexham 21st in the division and well off the pace of the promotion-chasing sides.

Points needed for Championship promotion

However, it is still very early days, and while unlikely, it remains possible that Wrexham can go for four in a row if they start winning consistently.

After QPR, Opta’s supercomputer has predicted that Wrexham will be relegated from the Championship in 2025/26.

Opta’s predicted table says that the Dragons will end the season with 53.50 points, leaving them above Sheffield Wednesday and Oxford United in the table.

Currently, Middlesbrough are expected to finish first in the second tier, with Bristol City backed to secure the second automatic promotion place.

Bristol City have a predicted points total of 75.27. Based on that, Wrexham, who have four points this season, need another 72 points this term to surpass the Robins.

With 41 league matches still to play, that works out at an average of 1.75 points per match.

Lowest points tally for Championship promotion

While Opta’s model can give some idea of how a team is going to fare across the season, a points total of around 76 to win automatic promotion is pretty low.

Last season, Leeds United and Burnley took the automatic places with 100 points each.

That was quite an unusual season with both teams reaching a century.

But even discounting last term, the lowest points tally recorded by a team that won automatic promotion from the Championship was 79 (Stoke City 2007/08 and Hull City 2012/13).

If Wrexham want to reach that figure in their remaining matches, they would need an average points total of 1.82 from their final 41 Championship fixtures.
