Wrexham return to League One action on Tuesday night as Michael Duff’s Huddersfield Town head to the STōK Cae Ras.

Saturday afternoon saw Wrexham pick up three points on the road as Phil Parkinson took his side to face Rotherham United.

Paul Mullin replaced the injured Jack Marriott and took his chance inside the first 30 seconds to claim a 1-0 win.

Wrexham travelled to Yorkshire over the weekend but we will see the reverse on Tuesday night as Huddersfield Town make the trip to the STōK Cae Ras.

Parkinson has lineup decisions to make for this game with ex-Huddersfield striker Mullin surely set to start again.

Terriers boss Michael Duff has praised Wrexham fans ahead of the game and he will have one former Wrexham fan in his squad.

Chris Maxwell returning to Wrexham

Huddersfield beat Bristol Rovers 3-1 over the weekend and one substitute will have been very familiar to Wrexham fans.

Chris Maxwell served as Huddersfield’s backup goalkeeper, offering experienced cover for first-choice stopper Jacob Chapman.

That has been Maxwell’s role for Huddersfield this season, starting a couple of EFL Cup games but sitting on the bench in League One.

St Asaph-born Maxwell has been a real success story of the Wrexham academy having come up in the club’s youth ranks.

After a loan spell with Connah’s Quay Nomads, Maxwell became a first-team star at the STōK Cae Ras, racking up 85 first-team appearances long, long before Arthur Okonkwo became Wrexham’s goalkeeping hero.

Fleetwood Town handed Maxwell a League Two move in 2012, but he returned on loan to Wrexham for first-team action in January 2013.

Maxwell excelled upon returning to Fleetwood and 2016 saw him complete a move to Championship side Preston North End.

The 34-year-old has since turned out for Charlton Athletic and Hibernian before racking up more than 100 appearances for Blackpool.

Now returning to Wrexham with Huddersfield, Maxwell will receive a warm welcome from the home crowd – even if he is chasing an away win.

Maxwell past comments on Wrexham

Maxwell has never earned a cap for Wales but was around the squad during his time at Preston North End.

An open training session at the STōK Cae Ras in 2018 saw Maxwell speak to Wrexham’s official YouTube channel.

Maxwell reflected on his time at Wrexham, noting that the club will always have a place in his heart having grown up at the club.

Maxwell appreciated the Wrexham fans and branded the club ‘the biggest club in North Wales’ in the process.

“I joined the club as a 10-year-old and Wrexham football club made me. Some of the staff that are still here, it’s been great to see them and I owe them a lot, Wrexham fans too, to support me at such a young age when I came into the team. It will always be a place in my heart and it will always be somewhere I treasure,” said Maxwell.

“It’s a massive club – it’s the biggest club in North Wales. For many years, it was the biggest club in Wales,” he added.

Maxwell is bound to be a little emotional upon returning to the STōK Cae Ras on Tuesday night and some may hope to see him return down the line, either as a player or coach as he heads towards the latter stage of his career.
