He left Wrexham in 2007 but could hand Rob McElhenney and Ryan Reynolds a big promotion boost this month

Rob McElhenney and Ryan Reynolds could secure a third promotion in a row this season as Wrexham owners.

Wrexham ended a 15-year stint in the National League in 2023 before securing another promotion in the following campaign.

Rob McElhenney and Ryan Reynolds deserve immense credit for the job they have done since acquiring the Welsh outfit in 2021.

But the American actors are now facing their toughest test yet – getting the Red Dragons into the Championship for the first time in their history.

Unlike the National League and League Two, there are a lot of teams with money to throw around and several sides stocked with Championship-quality players.

One of those teams is Birmingham City, who knocked Wrexham out of the automatic promotion places this past weekend.

Wycombe Wanderers are top of the league and still have a game in hand on Phil Parkinson’s side as well.

So, with a top-two finish by no means guaranteed, especially with Birmingham almost certainly set to clinch first or second place, Wrexahm’s priority should be the play-offs.

Darren Ferguson was a key player for Wrexham

On this front, they could be about to get some help from a former player.

Darren Ferguson joined Wrexham in 1999 after spells with the likes of Manchester United and Sparta Rotterdam.

The former midfielder made 310 appearances for the Red Dragons, scoring 51 goals and winning several trophies – including the FAW Premier Cup and Football League Trophy.

Ferguson left the Racecourse Ground in 2007, spending one season with Peterborough United before retiring in 2008.

The 52-year-old enjoyed two years as manager of The Posh in the late 2000s before having another three spells in their dugout, the latest of which began in 2023 and is still ongoing.

How Darren Ferguson can help Rob McElhenney and Ryan Reynolds win another Wrexham promotion

Wrexham beat Peterborough 2-0 in August, with Ferguson’s men having a pretty mixed 2024/25 so far.

They sit 13th in the League One table going into the latest round of fixtures but the former Scotland U21 international could be about to do his ex-team a big favour.

Peterborough face Stockport County before clashes with Mansfield Town and Barnsley round out their December.

At present, Stockport (5th) and Barnsley (7th) are both firmly in the mix to secure promotion in 2024/25.

But Ferguson could do Wrexham a massive favour by beating those teams this month, easing some of the pressure and creating a decent gap for Parkinson’s men after they dropped out of the top two last week.
