Josh Windass makes promise to Wrexham fans amid harsh verdict on his own performances

Josh Windass has given a pretty harsh assessment of his performances in a Wrexham shirt following his summer transfer.

Wrexham signing Windass for free has been praised as a bargain deal, with one journalist arguing he is a £10m player.

The midfielder suffered an injury earlier in the season but has now returned and already has six goals in three Championship appearances.

Despite this, Windass still believes there is a lot more to come from him at Wrexham.

In what may be viewed by some as a pretty harsh verdict, Windass suggested in an interview with The Athletic that he hasn’t played that well this season, promising that there is more to come.

He said: “We’ve got a lot to improve on. We’re 18th, not where we want to be, but it is very early days.

“I don’t feel I have played that well since I got here. I’ve just been doing all right. There’s a lot more to come. When the games come thick and fast, that’s when you start to get fitter.

“The owners, the lads, everyone at the club — there’s only one way we want to go and that’s up. Hopefully, by the next international break, we can be in a more positive position.”

Wrexham went into the October international break four points above the relegation zone and winless at home in the Championship.

Phil Parkinson’s verdict on Josh Windass is more positive

While the ex-Owl’s view of his own performances is pretty downbeat, Phil Parkinson has praised Windass heavily.

Speaking earlier this week, he said: “He’s a good footballer. He’s great at receiving the ball, but he can run [at opponents], and I think that’s key for those players in that position.

“If people are getting tight, you can run in behind as well, and he’s showed that variety in his game.

“And he showed [he can finish]. He’s got three goals already, one from the penalty spot.

“Josh is a very talented player, but he works for the team as well, and I think that’s key.”

Windass has competed with Nathan Broadhead for a place in the eleven so far this season, with the latter generally coming on late in the tie for the former Rangers man.

The prospect of both stars featuring from the off is exciting, but it would likely mean Lewis O’Brien losing his place.

Either way, it’s a welcome problem for Parkinson to have as he aims to turn Wrexham into a more consistent Championship team.
