Wrexham have secured a third straight promotion – and will be replacing Cardiff City in the Championship next season.

Saturday proved to be another memorable day in this remarkable Wrexham journey.

Wrexham beat Charlton Athletic 3-0 on Saturday evening, securing a passage to the Championship in the process.

Wycombe Wanderers lost at Leyton Orient earlier in the day, meaning Wrexham needed just one more win to reach the Championship.

Phil Parkinson and co wasted no time in securing that victory, beating Charlton comfortably with a superb performance.

Rob McElhenney believes Wrexham have more to come and Ryan Reynolds shared an emotional reaction as Wrexham secured back-to-back-to-back promotions.

Lee Trundle on Wrexham promotion

Wrexham players, fans and staff are on a quite remarkable journey right now, with Championship football a mere pipe dream even five years ago.

Most fans were hopeful of brighter times ahead when McElhenney and Reynolds completed their Wrexham takeover in 2021.

This level of success has just been astonishing, though, and Wrexham will now replace another Welsh team in the Championship.

Cardiff City’s time in the Championship came to an end on Saturday, as they drew 0-0 with West Bromwich Albion.

The Bluebirds will play League One football next season, with Wrexham effectively taking their place in the second tier.

Former Wrexham striker Lee Trundle – who also has strong ties to Swansea City – has taken to social media to react to Saturday’s results.

Trundle couldn’t help but poke some fun at Cardiff, first posting a series of laughing emojis as Luton Town’s win over Coventry City effectively condemned Cardiff to relegation.

Trundle was back after Wrexham’s win, congratulating Phil Parkinson’s side on promotion – and saying it was nice to have two Welsh teams in the Championship.

Cardiff fans were understandably fuming as they come to terms with dropping out of the Championship after a torrid season, but Trundle is delighted to see Wrexham on the rise again.

Wrexham miss out on Cardiff City clash

We can imagine that many Wrexham fans will be having a laugh at Cardiff’s expense.

Few could have predicted Wrexham overtaking Cardiff before the McElhenney and Reynolds takeover, but that is now a reality.

Wrexham will join Swansea City in the Championship, teeing up a couple of all-Welsh clashes next season.

Missing out on facing Cardiff does sting a little, though, as it’s more than 20 years since the sides met in a league game.

March 22, 2002 was the last time Cardiff and Wrexham locked horns in the league, with the Bluebirds running out 3-2 winners on that day.

Cardiff, Swansea and Wrexham all in the same league next season would have been fascinating to watch, but it will have to be one for the future after this weekend’s results.
