Wrexham have enjoyed unprecedented success since owners Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney took charge of the club in 2021.

Alongside key figures Humphrey Ker and Shaun Harvey, the duo have transformed the club from being frustrated in the National League to being one step away from the Premier League.

Phil Parkinson will lead his side out against Southampton in the Championship season opener having secured three successive promotions and getting Wrexham back in the second tier for the first time in 43 years.

Michael Williamson joined the club back in May 2024 as the club’s CEO and has revealed a rather shocking confession about his relationship with the Wrexham owners.

Michael Williamson didn’t know who Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney were before Wrexham job

Speaking on the latest episode of the ‘Fozcast’ alongside former Wrexham goalkeeper Ben Foster, Williamson has revealed that he had no idea who Reynolds and McElhenney were before taking on the role in North Wales.

Williamson stated: “To be very honest I didn’t really even know who Ryan [Reynolds] and Rob [McElhenney] were as actors.

“My wife knew Blake and that was when she was like oh yeah that’s the husband of Blake, apparently Blake Lively is very very popular in Italy and I had no idea.”

McElhenney once revealed he had never met Reynolds before they embarked on their adventure at Wrexham but Williamson had taken it one further.

They know each other very well now and have an excellent working relationship that is building upon achieving Wrexham’s ultimate goal of Premier League football.

The CEO has been the driving force behind the new Kop Stand plans and is actively looking to improve training facilities and the youth academy in order to attract a better quality of talent to the club.

Williamson was behind relaying the pitch at the Racecourse Ground in order for it to meet UEFA standards ahead of Wrexham hosting the Women’s U17 European Championships next summer.

It has been a busy year for the 53-year-old but he will be pleased with the progress made both on and off the pitch.
