Wrexham have become one of the most talked-about clubs in world football since the arrival of Rob McElhenney and Ryan Reynolds.

Wrexham may be in League One but are picking up new fans at a faster rate than many Premier League clubs.

The £2million takeover from Rob McElhenney and Ryan Reynolds in 2021 has catapulted Wrexham into worldwide prominence.

The ‘Welcome to Wrexham’ documentary series has helped drive interest in the Wrexham story, which has seen Phil Parkinson earn back-to-back promotions.

Reynolds is dreaming of another promotion this season with Parkinson admitting his Premier League dream as Wrexham boss.

Wrexham involved in non-league mix up

Wrexham’s rise has so many people interested in the club, so much so that one club has found themselves involved in a real mix-up.

Isthmian League North Division side Wroxham – based in Norfolk – are just one vowel away from Wrexham.

Wroxham chairman James Blower has now told BBC News that the club is often confused with Wrexham.

Blower noted that Wroxham are now starting their own documentary series on YouTube, unsurprisingly called ‘Welcome to Wroxham’.

Blower’s goal is to get more people in to watch games, but also hopes for a route to further investment in the club.

Fans and even potential sponsors have found themselves attempting to get hold of Wrexham but ending up with Wroxham, which Blower can only laugh about.

“We want to get more fans through the gate; we want to get a higher profile and ultimately, more commercial partners and investment,” said Blower. “We missed out on Hollywood investment by one vowel and this is a chance to showcase all that’s good about our club.

“People phone the club by accident or go on the website and they’ve got the wrong club. We also had an incident with a commercial partner who got incredibly excited when dealing with us.

“But then I realised the girls in the marketing team thought they were going to be working with Ryan Reynolds and not James Blower, and they were obviously very disappointed when they saw the reality,” he added.

‘Welcome to Wroxham’ takes playful jabs at Wrexham

Episode one of ‘Welcome to Wroxham’ was uploaded to YouTube and we had to give it a watch.

The episode opens with McElhenney commenting on buying Wrexham, leaving Blower to wistfully look to the skies whilst saying ‘it could have been us’.

We also see a section where ‘office admin’ Sarah jokingly takes phone calls from fans asking about Wrexham, simply telling them ‘there’s no Ryan Reynolds here’.

One player is seen throwing darts at a photo of McElhenney and Reynolds whilst fans chanted songs about Reynolds’ signature character ‘Deadpool’.

This was all in great taste and Wrexham fans will no doubt have a laugh at Wroxham’s playful jabs in the episode.

There are three more episodes to come and Wrexham fans should certainly check it out as Wroxham showcase their own story.
