‘Off guard…’ Wrexham expert reveals shock reason behind poor form of one of Phil Parkinson’s stars

Wrexham have battled their way to claiming four points from their last two fixtures against fellow promotion chasing sides.

Whilst the football from Phil Parkinson’s men was not pretty at times, Wrexham did the job in claiming a respectable points tally and it puts them in a strong position in League One.

Huddersfield manager Michael Duff claims Wrexham ‘did nothing‘ in their 1-0 victory over his side but superb defensive displays from Eoghan O’Connell and Thomas O’Connor formed the foundation for a vital win.

Attentions now turn to Rotherham at the Racecourse Ground and one player in particular has hit a period of poor form for the Red Dragons and could be an area that Parkinson tweaks for the clash.

Wrexham expert reveals reason behind poor Jay Rodriguez form

Wrexham fans were not impressed with Jay Rodriguez’s performance against Huddersfield Town and the former England international has struggled since arriving in North Wales.

Rodriguez is yet to get off the mark for the Red Dragons and speaking on the latest edition of the Rob.Ryan.Red. podcast, journalist and Wrexham expert Rich Fay has been discussing the reasons behind the striker’s struggles.

Fay stated: “It’s clear that Parky wants these two [Smith and Rodriguez] to be the strike force. What struck me on Tuesday night at Huddersfield was that I was even starting to wonder, is it a case of Jay Rodriguez just isn’t playing that well? Maybe he slightly underestimated League One.”

Fay then went on to explain: “Maybe it’s just caught him a little off guard because he hasn’t been playing as much at Burnley, and it is maybe just a little bit of sharpness he’s not quite got yet.”

Parkinson and team mates full of praise for Rodriguez

Phil Parkinson has praised Rodriguez despite criticism from the fans for his ‘brilliant’ ability to press from the front and that him and Sam Smith are ‘providing Wrexham with a platform to play’.

Steven Fletcher also has been impressed with Rodriguez since joining the club and claims that both he and Smith make the Scot’s job easier when coming on as they have tired out the opposition defenders.

It is a strike partnership that is yet to blossom in terms of goals and assists but is being appreciated by everyone at the club.

If results continue to be positive as they have done in recent matches, Parkinson will likely continue with his preferred choice of Rodriguez and Smith for much of the promotion run in.
