Wrexham showed their character and resilience as a squad once again as they produced a dramatic late comeback against Hull City.

Phil Parkinson’s men were crashing out at the first hurdle of the EFL Cup once again before two late stoppage time headers from Ollie Palmer rescued the game.

Jack Marriott was the hero in the shoot-out as he slammed home the winning penalty and Wrexham are now in the hat for round two, where they could potentially face Premier League opposition.

Wrexham fans were delighted for Palmer given his exile from the squad last season and the striker has opened up about his difficult situation at the club.

Ollie Palmers admits Phil Parkinson has left him in a ‘dark’ place amid Wrexham exile

Speaking to the Athletic, Palmer has admitted that he has had some ‘dark’ times since being exiled from the Wrexham side last season.

Parkinson has told Palmer he can leave Wrexham this summer, however, the striker wants to fight for his place and is hoping that his brace can serve as a stark reminder as to what he can bring to the table.

Palmer stated: “It’s hard. My family are in London and football isn’t always rosy. You’re out of the team, travelling up and down the country.

“Not being involved with the squad through February, March and April is hard and it gets a little bit dark. But you can’t pity yourself.

“You’ve got to remain professional. As much as you want to be a part of it, you have to show some character.”

Ollie Palmer ranks brace against Hull City as second best Wrexham moment

It was a night full of emotion for Palmer and the Racecourse Ground was at its very loudest during an incredible couple of minutes where he scored twice.

After having earned promotion in three successive seasons, Palmer told the Athletic that his EFL Cup heroics is now his second best memory at the club.

Palmer explained: “Tonight probably went into the top two. Promotion out of the National League, honestly the way we did that against Notts County was ridiculous.

“The three promotions for me are National League, League One and League Two in order of electricity and euphoria. But this is now in second place. So special.”

Parkinson now has a decision to make over whether to include Palmer in the matchday squad against West Brom given the injury to Kieffer Moore and Jay Rodriguez is set to have surgery.

The 33-year-old has done all that he can to make that possible, now the decision rests with the Wrexham boss.
