Paul Mullin has been like a man on a mission, determined to prove Phil Parkinson and Wrexham wrong as he looks to demonstrate his ability and why he should be given an opportunity upon his return to Wales next summer.
The striker is currently on loan at Wigan Athletic in League One, and he is arguably their most likely source of goals as the Latics look to make a return to the Championship.
He has already scored four goals across both the EFL Cup and League One for Wigan, and it is expected that he will continue to find the back of the net while playing in Greater Manchester.
However, Wigan were on the receiving end of a heavy defeat at the weekend, and things did not get much better midweek, as they were eliminated from the EFL Cup, with their manager Ryan Lowe sending a clear message to his squad.
Paul Mullin and Wigan must ‘strive for more’
Speaking after their 2-0 defeat to Wycombe Wanderers in the EFL Cup leading to their elimination from the competition, Ryan Lowe spoke with Wigan Today.
He made it clear that while he believes there is good work being demonstrated by the team, they still need to demand more of themselves.
He said: “We’re not the finished article, of course; we’ve had three losses, three wins and three draws; we’re sitting 12th in the division, and that’s probably about right of what we are right now.

“But I’m always striving for more. I want the players to strive for more. I know the fans want more, and the club want more, but unfortunately, we are what we are at this moment in time.
“It’s going to be a daily basis of coaching, communicating, training, video work, analysis stuff. It just doesn’t happen overnight, but what I have seen in certain games, I do genuinely feel we should be on 15 points rather than 12 because I think there are a few points that we should have definitely gained more of, so that would’ve looked a bit better, but the fact of the matter is, we are where we are.”
No Paul Mullin reunion with Wrexham in 2025
Wrexham could have come up against Wigan had the Latics progressed to the fourth round of the EFL Cup following the Red Dragons’ victory over Reading; however, their defeat has seen them eliminated from the competition.

As Wigan currently compete in League One and Wrexham in the Championship, there is no chance of the two clubs meeting in the league this season.
This means the two clubs could only square off in the FA Cup; however, Wrexham will not enter the competition until January 2026, meaning Paul Mullin could not face his parent club in 2025.
