Paul Mullin has given a telling interview at Wigan Athletic, after the Latics confirmed the loan signing of the Wrexham hero ahead of the 2025/26 season.

Wrexham have been promoted from League One ahead of next season. But fans will have a keen eye on the third tier next season after Paul Mullin left to join Wigan Athletic on loan.

It had been rumoured that the Latics were in talks to sign the 30-year-old ahead of next season. Then on Monday, Wigan Athletic confirmed the signing of Mullin who joins on loan for the 2025/26 season.

It comes after a really tough six months for Mullin. Phil Parkinson completely exiled him from the first-team during the second half of the 2024/25 season, and Mullin said he didn’t know why Parkinson dropped him, though the Dragons boss later explained.

As he had mentioned earlier in the year, Parkinson said Mullin fell down the pecking order at Wrexham following the January transfer window, where the club had signed Jay Rodriguez and Sam Smith.

Paul Mullin says Wrexham fame was ‘hard and strange’

Wrexham are certainly an unusual story. Under Hollywood owners Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney the club has achieved great success both on and off the pitch; earning three-straight promotions whilst becoming a global phenomenon, largely thanks to the success of the Welcome to Wrexham documentary.

Mullin even featured in a Deadpool film alongside Reynolds. And speaking after signing for Wigan, Mullin explained how the extra fame that came with being a Wrexham player was ‘hard and strange’ at times. He said when asked about the club’s global fame: “It’s been quite hard and strange to be honest, at times.

“I think when we were playing in the National League, and obviously because who the owners are and because the attention we had at the club after the documentary and things, I’d end up probably getting a lot more attention than any players who play in the Premier League who are a lot better at football than me!

“That was quite strange to accept. But I’m one of those people; I just get on with it, I just be myself and roll with it, and I find it quite funny to be honest.

“It’s an absolute privilege that anybody would ever stop me in the street to speak to me or take a photo, so it’s only right that I spare two seconds and I don’t have any problems with it because, ultimately, I’m just the same as everybody else, and I’m just in a privileged position.”

What Wigan Athletic manager Ryan Lowe has said about Paul Mullin

Mullin has certainly been the talk of the town over the last few days. The Wrexham saga is over for the time being and Mullin now has the chance to get back to scoring ways at what is a very well-established Football League club in Wigan Athletic.

And speaking about the signing, Wigan Athletic manager Ryan Lowe said of Mullin’s arrival: “I am delighted that we’ve managed to sign Paul. He’ll be a great addition to the group and is a player who is a proven goal scorer in the EFL.

“He has won promotion in his last three seasons with Wrexham AFC and will add firepower, know-how and experience to the group, which is really important.”

Mullin’s Wrexham years have certainly given him a kind of experience that very few players get in their careers. He knows how to handle the off-the-pitch noise and the fame, and more importantly he knows how to score goals.

If he can maintain fitness and stay injury-free next season then there’s no doubting that this is a shrewd signing for the Latics.
