Paul Mullin and Ollie Palmer fell out of favour at Wrexham in 2024/25, and Phil Parkinson has shared why that happened.

When fans think of Wrexham, two names that should instantly come to mind are Paul Mullin and Ollie Palmer.

The Red Dragons signed the duo during Rob McElhenney and Ryan Reynolds’ first full season as owners.

Together, they formed a deadly striker partnership that fired the club from the National League up to League One.

Mullin and Palmer then featured heavily in the first half of the most recent campaign, but things took a turn in January, and Phil Parkinson’s reason for axing the duo has now been shared.

Phil Parkinson on dropping Paul Mullin and Ollie Palmer

Mullin and Palmer featured on January 28 when Wrexham lost 3-2 to Stevenage at the Racecourse Ground – their first home defeat since March 2024.

However, neither player made another appearance for their long-time club in the remainder of the 2024/25 season.

Wrexham fans wanted Mullin to return to the side, but he did not, and Parkinson was largely coy on the reason for this.

However, in the Season 4 Episode 6 of Welcome to Wrexham, which aired in the UK on June 13, the manager has now explained his decision, pointing toward a lack of goals.

He said: “When we brought two strikers in January, we always knew we’d have a surplus of, and people would find themselves out of the 18-man squad because you can only have seven substitutes.

“That’s the way it is. Mulls didn’t just quite get the goals, which he normally does, and I thought he had a good start to the season, and his general performances were decent, but the goals just didn’t come, and we just needed more from the player in that number nine role.

“So Paul and Ollie found themselves out of the 18-man squad. It’s a harder level than we’d been operating at. So, both good lads, really good lads, have carried on training well for us. But it’s tough, it’s a competitive division, to make the step up is not easy.”

Paul Mullin and Ollie Palmer Wrexham contract end dates

Mullin has been linked with a move to Wigan Athletic during the 2025 summer transfer window.

The report at the time suggested that the player could leave Wrexham for nothing despite still being under contract until 2027.

Meanwhile, Palmer was due to become a free agent at the end of June but was given a new one-year contract in late 2024, meaning he is tied down until 2026.
