Paul Mullin should be pleased by EFL pundit’s prediction as ‘statement of intent’ transfer mooted at new club

Paul Mullin decided to leave Wrexham on loan this summer after falling heavily out of favour.

After scoring in a 3-2 loss versus Stevenage on January 28, Paul Mullin did not play another League One game for the Dragons in 2024/25.

Mullin opened up on his lack of playing time during the latest season of Welcome Wrexham, citing potential trust issues with manager Phil Parkinson.

Amid losing his place with the Welsh side after three seasons as their top goalscorer, the striker decided it was time to leave this summer to secure more regular minutes.

Mullin has started two games for Wigan Athletic in pre-season so far, but the Latics are planning to add more depth to the centre-forward ranks.

Paul Mullin prediction made as Wigan Athletic plot transfer

As well as the Wrexham loanee, Wigan have signed another number nine this summer in the form of Christian Saydee.

However, they are not expected to stop there, with Ryan Lowe also targeting a move for former Blackburn Rovers and Middlesbrough ace Jordan Rhodes.

Heavy competition is one of the reasons Mullin lost his place with Wrexham in the second half of 2024/25.

But he shouldn’t have that problem with Wigan, at least if what Don Goodman is predicting comes true.

The Sky Sports pundit was asked about a potential partnership between the Wrexham man and Rhodes, going on to say he expects the latter to be largely used off the bench.

Speaking to Football League World, he said: “It’s hard to see the pair of them as a strike partnership, but Wigan are going for it in the striking department.

“They’ve signed Christian Saydee and Paul Mullin, and to add Jordan Rhodes would be a statement of intent that Ryan Lowe wants to get on the front foot.

“But I do think, at this stage of his career, Jordan would not be a regular starter and more one that could come on and impact games.”

Should Wrexham recall Paul Mullin in January

Starting on a regular basis should see the striker return to his best, which could be good news for Wrexham.

The Dragons have already made one centre-forward signing this summer in the form of Ryan Hardie, but the overall quality of their attackers remains fairly low.

It’s hard to see Ollie Palmer, Modou Faal or Jay Rodriguez scoring much in the Championship.

But if Mullin impressed in League One, Wrexham could recall him over the winter if they are struggling for goals.
