Wrexham continue to make huge strides under Phil Parkinson but one signing will always be viewed as the real start of the Rob McElhenney and Ryan Reynolds era.

Imagine being told just five years ago that Wrexham would be second in League One with Hollywood owners at the helm.

The last few years have been beyond the wildest dreams of most Wrexham supporters.

Back-to-back promotions have propelled Wrexham into League One and this season has started brilliantly.

Wrexham sit second in the table with only big-spending Birmingham City ahead of Phil Parkinson’s side.

Parkinson can co continue to make Wrexham a real force to be reckoned with and Paul Mullin remains a key part of the success.

Paul Mullin’s trust in Rob McElhenney has paid off

McElhenney and Reynolds made big headlines after completing their takeover of Wrexham back in 2021.

The Hollywood duo wanted to really drive the club forward and Wrexham were busy in the summer after that takeover.

Liam McAlinden, Shaun Brisley, Jake Hyde and Harry Lennon all arrived before Wrexham made a huge splash.

In came Paul Mullin as the striker decided to leave Cambridge United – despite helping them win promotion to League One.

Eyebrows were raised; Mullin smashed smashed 32 goals in League Two but decided to drop into non-league with Wrexham.

The 29-year-old has now racked up 88 goals in 129 league games for Wrexham and has become a club hero.

The telling factor in Mullin’s decision to leave Cambridge appeared to be McElhenney.

Looking back at Mullin’s comments after signing for Wrexham, the striker highlighted McElhenney’s vision for the club – something Mullin simply couldn’t turn down.

As quoted by BBC Sport, Mullin wasn’t sure about the move at first but felt McElhenney’s plans were so ‘magnificent’ that he simply had to join.

“The ambition of the club attracted me here,” said Mullin.

“Rob McElhenney gave me a call a couple of nights ago – at that time, I wasn’t too sure about making the move.

“But once he outlined the plans for the club, and the plans for me in the future, it was something I really wanted to be a part of and something that just excited me that much that I had to come. He really sold the club to me. What they have planned for the club is magnificent and something I want to be a part of,” he added.

That decision has certainly paid off for Mullin, who has become a Wrexham hero for life and will go down in history at the club.

Mullin’s profile and reputation have received an enormous boost from being Wrexham’s main man and such a great personality on ‘Welcome to Wrexham’.

Yes, it took Mullin three extra years to play in League One, but his experience at Wrexham in that time has certainly made the move worthwhile for him as a player and as a person.

Mullin faces crucial Wrexham season

Mullin’s legacy at Wrexham is safe and secure having been the main goalscorer on the road from National League to League One.

This season could be pivotal though with Mullin yet to get off the mark in League One action.

All three of Ollie Palmer, Steven Fletcher and Jack Marriott are out of contract next summer unless any unknown extension clauses exist in their deals.

Modou Faal has been signed as a long-term option but Mullin may see a number of his fellow experienced strikers move on.

Mullin must prove that he deserves to still be a starting striker for Wrexham moving forward, whether that is in League One or the Championship.

This season has started slowly as Mullin overcomes an injury but he overcame a similar situation last season to finish as Wrexham’s top goalscorer – and few would be surprised if he does it again this season.
