Once again, Wrexham go into a new league as an unknown quantity, and given the fierce quality of the Championship, there are a lot of differing opinions about how the Dragons will cope next season.

Already there are predictions and opinions flying around about how Wrexham will fare in the Championship next season, following a historic third-straight promotion under owners Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney.

Former player Lee Trundle thinks Wrexham can compete in the Championship, with many others seemingly backing Wrexham to be a hit in the second tier next season.

Midfielder Ollie Rathbone says Wrexham can cause some upsets in the Championship and released Mark Howard has also backed the Dragons to thrive in the league. But manager Phil Parkinson has shown a bit more caution to the subject.

Phil Parkinson’s subdued Championship prediction for Wrexham

So far this summer, Wrexham have signed two new players in Ryan Hardie and Danny Ward. There’s inevitably going to be many more, but it’s a somewhat slow start, and as Wrexham gear up for their pre-season tour of Australia, Parkinson might have hoped that he’d have one or two more bodies in for the tour.

Speaking from Australia, Parkinson was asked about his side’s chances in the Championship next season. He simply played up the level of quality in the league, going on to say that there’s still a lot of work for the club to do in the transfer market which might suggest Parkinson currently has reservations going into next season.

He told ESPN: “I mean it’s very difficult to predict where we’re going to be, because like I said the recruitment has still got some work to be done. But we’re going into a league with a lot of clubs with spending power. It’s very, very competitive.”

What Phil Parkinson said about the transfer state of play at Wrexham

In the same interview, Parkinson discussed Wrexham’s transfer state of play. He revealed how he’s on the phone to agents late into the morning, trying to get some more players to move to the Racecourse ahead of next season.

Parkinson said: “This morning, I was probably on the phone until about three o’clock. Going through, speaking to agents, catching up with a few players we’ve been speaking to. It’s crucial. What we don’t want to do with this trip is have the time difference impact on the recruitment. We’re working hard to make sure that doesn’t happen.”

So there are certainly some irons in the fire, and Lewis O’Brien could be the next to join amid reports that Wrexham have agreed a £5million fee for O’Brien, though the Nottingham Forest man’s current wage demands are proving to be a sticking point.

No other names seem to be that closely linked with a move to Wrexham right now. But like with the Hardie deal, we could see Wrexham announce an exciting new signing out of nowhere.
