Wrexham manager, Phil Parkinson has opened up about the fixture congestion that is set to affect the Reds in the coming weeks.
It has been a great season for Wrexham on their return to the EFL which has seen them rise to third in League Two.
This has also seen Phil Parkinson’s side progress in the FA Cup, securing yet another place in the fourth round.
The Reds will travel to face Blackburn Rovers in the next stage of the competition which has excited fans with a Championship clash.
As a result of the progression, there will need to be fixtures moved around in order to fit them all into an already tight schedule.
Now the Wrexham boss has opened up and been discussing this exact point in the past few days.
Phil Parkinson on Wrexham fixture congestion
It is safe to say that the additional games that the Reds have played in various competitions have taken their toll. In 158 days since the beginning of the League Two season, they have played 34 games in all comps. This averages out as a game every four days which is a tough schedule to keep up with.
With Wrexham moving forward in the FA Cup, this will mean that league games have to be rescheduled to fit it in. This will affect the congestion of their fixtures.
In an interview with Leader Live, Parkinson has opened up about this and isn’t using it as an excuse for their form.
On that, he first praised the cup win. He said: “We will fit those games in. With cup success, you do end up having to rearrange league games but that is part and parcel.”
The positives come with their drawbacks and if they have to face Championship side, Blackburn, they have to move other games. He also suggested injury concerns are starting to clear up which should come as a benefit.
Continuing on, he said: “Hopefully we have got players coming back from injury in the next week or so to boost the numbers in the squad. When you are a team that has played four games in 10 days over Christmas, three games in seven days which will happen as we go forward should be a lot more comfortable.
“We prepared a lot for that Christmas period on the training ground and I was very pleased how we came through that physically, particularly the fourth game against Barrow.”
He finished off by saying: “That doesn’t concern us.”
It is clear that Parkinson isn’t worried about this build-up of games and this should give fans hope of a positive winter.
