Phil Parkinson comments suggest Jacob Mendy has a big part to play at Wrexham, he’s getting ‘back to his best’

Wrexham have secured a first January signing but Phil Parkinson is also securing the futures of current players.

Wrexham drew 1-1 with Birmingham City on Thursday night, turning in a strong performance against the League One leaders.

This was a reminder of Wrexham’s quality and battling spirit after a frustrating defeat at Shrewsbury Town.

Wrexham then made a first signing of the January window less than 24 hours later.

Ryan Longman has signed for Wrexham in a £500,000 move from Hull City after days of speculation surrounding a move.

Longman will be expected to make a big impact for Wrexham and Phil Parkinson is looking to keep some of his key players around his new signing.

Phil Parkinson on Jacob Mendy

Wrexham confirmed two new contracts on Friday.

Striker Jack Marriott was given a new deal having showed his goalscoring prowess in League One this season.

Marriott has missed a chunk of the season through injury but Wrexham are clearly confident in him having a long-term impact.

Wrexham also handed a new contract to Jacob Mendy, who was scheduled to become a free agent this summer.

The Gambian has only started one League One game this season having endured his own injury battles.

Parkinson told Wrexham’s official website that whilst Mendy has endured a ‘tough time’ with his injuries, he believes that the left wing back is getting ‘back to his best’.

“We’re pleased that Jacob has signed a new contract with us,” said Parkinson.

“He’s had a tough time through injury, but I believe we’re getting him back to his best,” he added.

More chances to come for Jacob Mendy

Mendy has become a Gambian international at Wrexham and believes his move to the STōK Cae Ras helped him fulfil that dream.

Snapped up from Boreham Wood in 2022, Mendy has been a regular throughout Wrexham’s rise except for this injury-hit campaign.

We couldn’t blame anyone who thought that Mendy could be moved on at the end of the season; 28, coming off a number of injuries, out of contract – it all pointed towards a potential exit.

Parkinson clearly believes in Mendy though and now thinks that the worst of the injury hell is behind him.

This backing means that we will surely see more of Mendy in the Wrexham first team despite competition on the left flank being fierce.

Captain James McClean is still Wrexham’s first-choice left wing back and summer signing Sebastian Revan should have a big future at the club.

Mendy’s new deal gets him right in that mix not just for this season, but potentially beyond – and he will be desperate to repay Parkinson’s faith in him after a frustrating 2024.
