Wrexham have had a superb start to the 2024/25 season but Dan Scarr is struggling to break into the team.

Dan Scarr arrived at the Racecourse Ground from Plymouth Argyle on August 2nd, 2024.

As has often been the case since Rob McElhenney and Ryan Reynolds took the reigns, Wrexham were able to convince a player to drop down a division in order to join their club.

Scarr was a regular feature for Plymouth in the Championship, making 31 appearances across all competitions in the previous campaign.

Now though, the centre-back may be regretting his decision to swap Devon for Wales.

Wrexham are currently second in the League One table going into their weekend meeting with Birmingham City.

The Welsh outfit have won three and drawn one of their opening four games, with several new players impressing.

George Dobson has shone for Wrexham since his free transfer from Charlton Athletic, as has former Arsenal goalkeeper, Arthur Okonkwo.

Phil Parkinson explains why Dan Scarr is not starting games

Scarr, however, has not been so lucky and is yet to start a League One game in 2024/25.

In fact, the stopper has been left on the bench for all four of Wrexham’s league matches this term, only featuring in a League Cup defeat to Sheffield United last month.

Now, Phil Parkinson has offered an explanation for the centre-back’s lack of minutes, as per Leader Live, stating that he wants to give the established Wrexham players a chance to keep their spots.

He said “In my time here, we have given the existing lads who have done well for us the opportunity because they deserve that.

“But as the season goes on, as we know it is about the squad and being able to make changes to freshen the team up when the midweek games come.

“Lewis and Dan understand the situation. They have come in, they both had really good seasons and were key players at their previous clubs.

“Equally, the lads already here have done really well but they are pushing really hard which is great and their opportunities will come, sometimes when you least expect it.”

Who will Phil Parkinson drop for Dan Scarr at Wrexham

Scarr is expected to get minutes at some point this season but how he fits into the team remains to be seen.

Max Cleworth, Eoghan O’Connell and Tom O’Connor were Parkinson’s three main centre-backs during their promotion-winning season and have kept their starting berths in 2024/25.

All three have looked sharp in the opening stages of the campaign, with Cleworth scoring in the 2-0 win over Peterborough United at the weekend.

But Cleworth is the least experienced of that trio, so there is a chance he loses his place once Scarr starts to play regularly.

Either way, it is a very good problem for Parkinson to have as he aims to secure a third straight promotion with Wrexham.
