Wrexham know they must keep winning football matches if they are to achieve League One promotion this season.
Phil Parkinson’s side picked up their 20th clean sheet of the season in a 2-0 win over Exeter but are still locked in a battle with Wycombe for the final automatic promotion slot.
Jay Rodriguez scored in consecutive games with a coolly taken penalty and will be hoping to continue his recent run of form in front of goal for Wrexham.
Paul Mullin returns to his old club but whether the 30-year-old will be part of the matchday squad against Cambridge remains to be seen, he played in the reverse fixture which proved to be a frustrating one for the Red Dragons.
Phil Parkinson frustrated at Wrexham in previous Cambridge clash
The reverse fixture between Wrexham and Cambridge ended in a 2-2 draw at the Racecourse Ground as a late equaliser from the visitors cancelled out what was thought to be the winner from Steven Fletcher.
Speaking to the club’s official YouTube channel after the game, Parkinson was frustrated at his side’s inability to kill the game off at 2-1 and will not want a repeat in their upcoming clash.
Parkinson stated: “We get ahead and I think once we got ahead, we didn’t do enough to go and kill the game and I think we’ve got to look at that.”
Cambridge sit second from bottom in League One but Parkinson already knows the importance of not taking the opponents lightly.
Parkinson explained: “We’ve done so well at home, it was almost like it was just going to take care of itself and we got punished.”
Ollie Rathbone the key for Wrexham in Cambridge clash
Fletcher’s goal in that reverse fixture was created by some incredible closing down from midfielder Ollie Rathbone and after that game he received high praise from his manager.
Parkinson stated: “Fantastic bit of closing down from Ollie Rathbone, I thought he was outstanding all game I really did.”
Rathbone praised the fans after the Exeter win but if he continues to produce the excellent form he has shown this season then the adulation will be reciprocated by the Wrexham followers.
The midfielder has scored six goals in the league this season and opened the scoring in the win over Exeter last time out, his runs from deep into the box could be key again in what will prove to be another tough test against Cambridge.
