Paul Mullin sent emotional Cambridge United goodbye in 2021, he may miss Wrexham return

Wrexham are back on the road on Tuesday night as Phil Parkinson takes his side to face Cambridge United in another huge League One clash.

Wrexham beat Exeter City 2-0 on Saturday afternoon, taking another step towards the Championship.

Ollie Rathbone and Jay Rodriguez found the net, handing Wrexham an important victory down in Devon.

There is little time for Wrexham to rest – or celebrate – as Phil Parkinson’s side are straight back in action on Tuesday night.

Cambridge United are the opponents this time, with Neil Harris battling against relegation to League Two.

Wrexham will be favourites here, and this could end up being the tale of two former Cambridge United strikers.

How Paul Mullin reacted to Cambridge United exit

Wrexham are likely to start with former Cambridge striker Sam Smith in attack.

Smith became Wrexham’s record signing in January, with the striker completing a big-money move from Reading.

Smith had two spells at Cambridge, first joining on loan in 2019 before returning permanently in 2021.

Cambridge signed Smith to replace Paul Mullin, who decided to leave the club in order to join Wrexham.

Mullin’s departure left Cambridge gutted, and he went on to become a goalscoring hero at the STōK Cae Ras.

Mullin remains out of favour at Wrexham right now, though, and may miss out on a return to Cambridge this evening.

The Wrexham striker would be gutted to miss out on a return to Cambridge, having said such an emotional goodbye nearly four years ago.

Taking to social media, Mullin sent a message to Cambridge fans as he came to the end of his contract.

Mullin admitted that he wanted to stay at Cambridge ‘forever’ but a new deal just couldn’t be worked out.

Mullin added that Cambridge would always be in his heart, having enjoyed his 18 months at The Cledara Abbey Stadium.

“Thank you to every single person connected to Cambridge United. It was an absolute pleasure to play for your club,” said Mullin.

“I would have loved to stay forever. We tried to work things out but ultimately we just couldn’t.

“I owe a lot to the gaffer, all his staff and especially my teammates, we achieved something that no-one would have ever thought was possible.

“I will never forget celebrating with the fans on top of the roof after promotion, having a stand named after me (although just for a few games), and breaking a goalscoring record or two.

“It’s a shame I never got to share it with the Amber Army more often. But until we meet again, your club will always be in my heart,” he added.

Paul Mullin waiting for Wrexham return

When Wrexham’s fixture list emerged last summer, few could have expected Mullin to be exiled for the trip to Cambridge.

Mullin has gone from being Wrexham’s goalscoring hero to being completely left out of the matchday squad under Phil Parkinson.

Mullin did score against Mansfield Town in the Central League last week, but that was not enough for a place in the squad against Exeter City.

That means Mullin looks likely to miss out again on Tuesday night, robbing him of a chance to return to Cambridge with Wrexham.

Cambridge fans may even feel a little disappointed not to see Mullin make a return on Tuesday night, but that is just the situation he finds himself in right now.

Mullin just has to keep working hard and hope for his chance to shine again, but the rumours of a potential summer exit just won’t go away until he plays again.
