Phil Parkinson has now responded after Wrexham gave youngster Max Cleworth a new contract.

Wrexham have shown a conscious effort to build for the future this summer by signing younger players in the transfer market, acquiring 22-year-old Arthur Okonkwo and 23-year-old Lewis Brunt on long-term contracts.

This show of faith in youth by Rob McElhenney and Ryan Reynolds is the way forward and can see the Reds become a sustainable force.

One outcome supporters have been hoping to happen for a while is a new contract for highly-rated defender Max Cleworth, whose deal was set to expire in the summer of 2025.

There were obvious worries that the 21-year-old would be subject to interest from clubs higher up the pyramid and the prospect of him leaving for free next summer.

However, those worries have now been eradicated as Cleworth has signed a new contract, keeping him at the Racecourse Ground till 2027.

Phil Parkinson issues verdict on Max Cleworth after signing new contract

Cleworth matured into an outstanding defender for Phil Parkinson last term, with the youngster starring on the right of a back three.

In his debut campaign in the football league, the Welshman made 24 appearances in the league and impressed with his calm and assured performances.

Former Wrexham boss Bryan Hughes previously dubbed Cleworth a ‘super player’, Andy Morrell tipped him to have a big future in the game while former defender Ben Tozer thinks he’s got ‘Premier League written all over him’.

That is a sentiment echoed by Parkinson, who claimed the key reason he was given a bumper contract was his “huge potential” while sharing the importance of keeping talented youngsters at the club.

Responding to this news via Wrexham’s official website, the 56-year-old said: “Max has been on a great journey with us so far and I’ve really enjoyed watching him develop as a player.

“He’s a player with a huge potential and it’s important to keep our up-and-coming players with the Club.”

This is fantastic news for Wrexham

After suffering the blow of losing talisman Paul Mullin to injury last night, supporters have been treated to some fantastic news that Cleworth has committed his future to Wrexham.

Many people associated with the Reds – including Parkinson – believe he’s got huge potential to become a top defender and perhaps pocket Wrexham a big sum in the future.

Given his age, his ability to play with the ball at his feet and his reading of the game despite his tender age, Cleworth is a talent who is destined to catch the eye in League One.

Defenders in the modern game need to be comfortable in possession while upholding the physical attributes; Cleworth possesses both in abundance, which is why the club were keen on awarding him a new contract.

From the club’s business so far, it is clear they’re building for the future and Parkinson’s talented centre-back will play a huge role in whatever success they continue to have.
