Wrexham secured a 1-1 draw with Derby County in the Championship on Saturday afternoon, meaning their wait goes on for a home win in the second tier this campaign.

The Red Dragons were winning 1-0 after a Lewis O’Brien goal before Ben Brereton equalised with a fantastic strike, with this failure to win from a winning position meaning that only one club has dropped more points from a winning position than Wrexham this campaign.

Wrexham’s players impressed throughout the match against Derby, with standouts being Dom Hyam and Issa Kabore.

While Phil Parkinson and his team were disappointed with the eventual result, he, the Wrexham manager, had a message for the fans following the draw.

Phil Parkinson believes the atmosphere the fans created is at a level he needs every week

The Wrexham manager was pleased with the atmosphere created by the fans at the Racecourse against Derby County, as he believed it helped his side perform and get a result against the Rams.

Parkinson spoke to the club media after the match about just how impressed he was with how the Wrexham atmosphere reminded him of some of the biggest stadiums in the Championship.

He said: “I thought the crowd were brilliant today, absolutely brilliant; they really were. That was the atmosphere back to what it has been, and I thank them for that.

“We need that. I went to West Brom last night, and the place is bouncing. We have been to Southampton, we have been to Millwall, we have been to Norwich, and today our atmosphere matched those, and it was fantastic.

“They nearly got what the supporters deserve, which was three points.”

Wrexham’s capacity compared to other Championship grounds

The Red Dragons have the second smallest stadium by capacity in the Championship at present due to the work being done on the ground, as they look to grow and develop.

While a larger crowd may be able to generate a larger atmosphere, there is a unique one at a smaller ground where the fans are upon you, like at Wrexham.

The 10,500 capacity at Wrexham is nothing in comparison to the almost 40,000 of Sheffield Wednesday or the 33,746 at the Riverside in Middlesbrough, according to Transfermarkt.

Parkinson will be aware of this, but he has the belief in the Wrexham faithful that the fans can make the place an imposing place to visit and one opposition players dread; the atmosphere just needs to be like it was against Derby.
