Wrexham succumbed to a disappointing derby defeat to Shrewsbury Town as they missed the chance to go top of League one.

Wrexham lost the game 2-1 thanks to a John Marquis double despite another Ryan Barnett assist for Steven Fletcher that brought hope to the Red Dragons.

Eoghan O’connell scored 1/10 in the Wrexham player ratings after mistakes for both goals cost Wrexham three points at New Meadow.

Phil Parkinson was disappointed with a lot of aspects of the performance and highlighted one area in particular where his side have to improve upon.

Phil Parkinson ‘looking closely’ at dismal away form

Speaking to Sky Sports in their post-match coverage of Shrewsbury Town v Wrexham, boss Parkinson discussed Wrexham’s continued poor away form this season.

Parkinson stated: “Tonight the performance was not at the level it needed to be in many aspects and I’ve got to look at that closely. We’ve got an important week now on the training pitch to prepare for Birmingham.”

When asked about looking ahead to the next match, Parkinson revealed that he thought his players deserved criticism for their performance but was now focusing ahead on the Birmingham game.

The manager stated: “We’ve had a lot of good times and had a lot of praise but tonight we deserve to get criticism because the level of our performance wasn’t where it needed to be but we will take that criticism together as a group and come out and respond next week.”

Wrexham need to strengthen their squad in January

The result highlighted the need for Parkinson to strengthen his squad in the January transfer window as yet again Wrexham failed to create many chances.

Wrexham are interested in Michael Smith from Sheffield Wednesday as the forward line is in need of some fresh impetus. Jayden Danns of Liverpool has also been linked to Wrexham.

Smith has been in good form for Wednesday this season contributing five goals and four assists in his 25 appearances in the Championship and should Wrexham be able to lure him to the Racecourse Ground, he would provide a much-needed goal threat.

Wrexham may also be on the hunt for a defender following O’Connell’s recent performances, where he has made mistakes directly leading to goals in the last two away fixtures against Barnsley and Shrewsbury.
