Phil Parkinson will have to overcome a mind-blowing record if Wrexham are to beat Barnsley

Wrexham will be up against it when they travel to Barnsley on New Year’s Day.

The Red Dragons capped off their 2024 in style, seeing off Wigan Athletic by two goals to one.

Phil Parkinson’s men have now moved ahead of Wycombe Wanderers and up to second in the League One table for the time being.

However, the race for automatic promotion remains very tight and Wrexham could easily slip out of the top two in the next few days.

Birmingham City and Wycombe have games in hand on the Welsh outfit and are both much better at scoring goals this term.

Wrexham now take on Barnsley in a 3pm kick-off on January 1st and are up against it for a number of reasons.

Barnsley home record vs Wrexham is staggering

Firstly, while Wrexham are excellent at home and are currently on the longest unbeaten run in the EFL, their record away from the Racecourse Ground isn’t great.

The club had poor patches on the road last season and have continued to drop points in the current campaign.

But their trip to Oakwell on Wednesday appears to be an especially tough test when looking at Barnsley’s record against Wrexham.

The two sides, when playing in the Football League, have met at Barnsley’s ground on 16 occasions throughout history.

However, in a pretty mind-blowing stat, Barnsley have won 12 of those games, drawing the remaining four, and scoring at least two goals in every meeting.

What happened last time Wrexham faced Barnsley

While that record isn’t great, fans will be pleased to learn the majority of those matches came over two decades ago.

The Red Dragons spent 15 years in the National League and as a result, their only recent meeting with the Yorkshire outfit came earlier this season.

Wrexham beat Barnsley 1-0 at the Racecourse on December 3rd thanks to an injury-time winner from Ollie Rathbone.

It was a tight game, however, and given the historic record and Parkinson’s team not being great on the road, another close encounter is likely this week.
